Congratulations, President Obama

President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said. "In the past year Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations."

He added that the committee endorsed "Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'"

Yes!!!

Yes indeed, congratulations Mr. President ... my president and I am so proud.

    I love it.

  4. I'm not critical of Obama's efforts so far and I'm happy that Obama's intentions are being recognised but I would have preferred for the committee to have awarded the Peace Prize to him next year. Doing so would give him more time to fullfill those hopes that he has given people.

It seems as if this time the committee has given the award more in the spirit of wishful thinking.....

  5. So let's see, maybe the world isn't so upside down after all. President Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize and Sarah Palin is being left out in the cold when it comes to campaigning for others...
Sarah Palin stands ready to stump for the Republican gubernatorial candidates running in the two most closely-watched campaigns in the country this fall, but neither seems to want her help.

And a former Alaskan econimist is giving a pretty poor review of Palin's "AGIA" deal.

A complex deal between the state and TransCanada Corp. to spur construction of a multibillion-dollar natural gas pipeline has done little to make the project more commercially viable and could put the state at financial risk, a former state petroleum economist says.

Speaking at an oil industry gathering Thursday in Anchorage, Roger Marks said state leaders made faulty assessments in their quest to land the long-sought pipeline project. At issue is the state's $500 million subsidy and exclusive license to pipeline builder TransCanada -- a deal championed by former Gov. Sarah Palin and approved last year by the Legislature.

    Kathleen,
While I agree that it might have been better to wait to give President Obama the Nobel next year, at this point it seems that his goals of ridding the world of nuclear weapons, and desire to see people work together to make the world a better place are reason enough to award him this honor, and despite the fact that he has only been in office for a short time, I think that the reason is not so much his achivements in that area as it is the knowledge that he has and will continue to work with people as opposed to working against people, and he seems to have given the global community much more hope for a better world.

I do not always agree with the President and his choices but I have been more hopeful for this world since he became the president than I have in a very long time. For me, that is enough to award him this honor. (of course this is simply my opinion :) )

  6. And again in a stunning coincidence, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar for best picture will be given this year to the Vince Vaughn vehicle “Guys Weekend to Burp,” which is being story-boarded at the moment but looks very good indeed. Mr. Vaughn, speaking through his publicist, said was “touched and moved” by the award and would do everything in his power to see that the picture lives up to expectation and opens big sometime next March.

  7. Oops..quoted wrong part. :/

At the same time, and amazingly enough, the Pulitzer Prize for Literature went to Sarah Palin for her stated intention “to read a book someday.” The former Alaska governor was described as “floored” by the award, announced in Stockholm by nude Swedes... beating themselves with birch branches, and insisted that while she was very busy right now, someday she would make good on her vow to read a book. “You’ll see,” she said from her winter home in San Diego

  22. Kathleen told me off and said that I shouldn't give the impression to the readers that something will be published very soon or even during the next days - and she is right. That's not what I wanted to express. I wanted to make clear that things are now on the right path. The right people are now communicating with each other. This is a huge step forward. It will take some time to see the results.

However, I feel that we slowly enter the "last chapter" in the history of Sarah Palin's faked pregnancy. She certainly knows that she is cornered. Her silence speaks volumes. Once one media outlet dares to publish the story or parts of it, it will all be over soon. Believe me, we have Champagne in our fridge, too, and our shiny new French silver ice bucket just itches to be used on the day when the big news are finally out there.

  24. I'm thrilled with our president's Nobel Prize.

Should they have waited a year? Well, I guess there just wasn't anyone else with a better claim to it RIGHT NOW!

And my first thought was that the Nobel Selection Committee was probably also so enormously relieved that McCain wasn't elected, died (natural causes, of course -- of course! could anyone doubt that?), and now Ms Palin would be POTUS and we would be heading right toward a train wreck that would affect each and every one of us human beans on the planet.

  27. This was posted on Gryphen's blog (IM) and I think it needs to be posted EVERYWHERE!

"The Nobel Peace Prize is an award presented to either an individual or an organization in accordance with Alfred Nobel's living will. Alfred Nobel, creatoar of the five Nobel Prizes, was a Swedish inventor and industrialist. He disposed the Nobel Prize in his will to be awarded to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." The Nobel Peace Prize differs from the Nobel Prizes in literature, physics, chemistry, and medicine or physiology in that it may be presented not only to individuals, but also to organizations that are actively engaged in a process or effort that intends to promote world peace. The prize can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved an issue."

  30. "In one sense, the award was a rebuke to the foreign policies of Mr. Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, some of which the president has sought to overturn. Mr. Obama made repairing the fractured relations between the United States and the rest of the world a major theme of his campaign for the presidency. Since taking office as president he has pursued a range of policies intended to fulfill that goal. He has vowed to pursue a world without nuclear weapons, as he did in a speech in Prague earlier this year; reached out to the Muslim world, delivering a major speech in Cairo in June; and sought to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians."

  32. OFF TOPIC BUT this must be shared:

    from POLITICO:

Palin notably absent from gov. races
    By: Jonathan Martin

Sarah Palin stands ready to stump for the Republican gubernatorial candidates running in the two most closely watched campaigns in the country this fall, but neither seems to want her help. ...

Palin is the only one of the most talked-about potential 2012 presidential candidates who has not yet campaigned for either Republican candidate.

Given her loyal following among many in the party’s grass roots, it’s Palin who could surely draw the largest crowd and perhaps raise the most money for the two candidates — her book, “Going Rogue,” is already the No. 1 best-seller on Amazon, more than a month before it’s even released.

“The governor offered her assistance with both races,” said Palin adviser Meg Stapleton. “The ball is in their court.”

Neither GOP campaign wanted to discuss why they didn’t want Palin in the state — to say so would offend the conservative base that both Christie and McDonnell are counting on, not just to vote for them but to also volunteer time in the crucial final weeks of the election. ...

Yet the two Republican candidates have welcomed outside help from GOP luminaries. Potential 2012 rivals Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty have been to both states, and McDonnell has also welcomed such conservatives as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Privately, Republicans aides in Virginia and New Jersey fret that a Palin appearance with their candidates could offend swing voters who are turned off by the polarizing Alaskan

  43. Thank for for the link to the ridiculous Sarah Shoot. I would not hire that guy to photograph a kid's birthday party. I could not decide which photo was worse. I guess my favorite is the big boob picture of Sarah in the orange sweater posing on the dock. The title should read, "I hope that Russia can see how beautiful I am."

She has a pimple; she has wrinkles under her eyes. A good photographer would know how to light Sarah so we didn't see these things. The crew must include a hair person and makeup artist. They should have hired the team from the McCain campaign who did a much better job. In one photo, Sarah's face-skin is flawless and creamy while I can see her neck and chest is freckled. Makeup, people, makeup! Pay attention!

And, in the picture that was chosen, I don't know why Sarah persists in wearing those youthful hair extensions. She's not that young anymore. But, all things considered, her up-do isn't that flattering any more; one looks like she is wearing a little hat.

All of this is petty; we are not supposed to judge a book by its cover. This is not Vogue, Elle or Glamour Magazine. We should just wait for one more month. I think that the contents will match the pictures that Patrick provided. Eeeech.

  48. ***NEWSFLASH***

One of your masterspies in Alaska has alerted me that

    TRACK PALIN

has been a bad boy again!

Ok, it's just a small speeding offence, and we all have received speeding tickets before, but can somebody please explain what this means:

    "Minor Off per Bail Sched"

What does the bail schedule have to do with that? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Minor offense per bail schedule?

Don't know about Alaska, but most areas for traffic tickets you post bail after the court sends the info., then you can either appear in court or forfeit bail. So the bail is the fine paid, if you don't want to appear.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Track hass been home since September 18, got a speeding ticket on October 2, but yet Palin and Tawd "Welcomed their son home" yesterday? What..it was all for show? Not one photo of Track...was he even in Fairbanks?

    ReplyDelete
  51. He's ready to rock and roll.

He must have returned about mid Sept as they said earlier. The event yesterday was geared more for Sarah. I am sure he would not want to be seen even if he was there. He is pissed and that temper isn't pretty. Willow and Bristol don't want nothing to do with drama mama public prop displays. The happy marriage is all she can hope to pull off now.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just want to add my congratulations to President Obama. I have a great deal of confidence in President Obama. He certainly inherited a multitude of immense problems left by the Bush regime, but as we all noted a year ago in September 2008, he is a very capable multi-tasker! President Obama has not had to suspend everything else in order to address one issue at a time, unlike Senator McCain when he suspended his campaign to have his makeup applied and do an interview with Katie Couric (while David Letterman watched in amazement!). Can you hear my big sigh of relief??

    ReplyDelete
  53. President Obama announced that he would be donating his Nobel Prize money (over a million dollars) to charity. I think that it would be fitting to donate the money to Acorn. Please write in with your suggestions, too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Patrick, take a look at Bristol’s 8/6/07 speeding ticket, which was also 4-9MPH over. Under Degree of Offense, it says “Infraction”.

Track’s speeding ticket from 9/6/07 10-19 MPH over, the Degree of Offense is also “Infraction”.

But Track’s 10/2/09 speeding ticket for 4-9 MPH over, the Degree of Offense says: “Minor Off per Bail Sched”. That indicates to me that he may be on probation for a previous matter and this may have violated the probation/bail. You do not post bail for a minor speeding ticket. It should have said “Infraction” if there was no other circumstance involved.

(Side note: August/September 2007 must have been a bad month for some reason? Perhaps some Palin’s were a bit upset or angry?)

    ReplyDelete
  55. You don't have to be a Palin in the Valley to be let off on a lesser offense. He may have been under the influence or carrying.
They are not going to treat a Palin with full extent of the law. The media would know about this and they won't report anything. You have to talk to the kids to know what happened. Now if this was a Johnston, that is another story.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Patrick - I love your hint of good news - if I'm reading between the lines correctly :) And I so agree with your assessment that once one media outlet tells some piece of this story - most likely through one source's part of the story - the whole thing will come tumbling down soon enough. And that will be a whole case of Veuve Cliquot good :)

PCGrandma - very interesting interpretation of Track's speeding ticket problem. Geesh, how long was he home until he got into trouble again?

    ReplyDelete
  57. ProChoiceGrandma -- What age was Track when the brakes were cut on the school bus fleet?
Is that why you think he may be on probation at this time? How old is he now? He was under 18 when the bus fleet was attacked? What was the date? I think I remember his friends were named and they said he didn't do it.
How old were they? Did they go to juvy or jail?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm confused. The tabloids reported Track was on Oxycontin, when was using? Was he in trouble or did he get off? Was that at the same time as the school bus vandals? Where was he when the police were delaying the Oxycontin arrest of Mrs. Johnson? Were he and Levi were friends? Could Track have been one of the informants? I can't wait until all that is cleared up. I know it is a small town mentality and everyone knows everyone. How do they manage living so close when one person is informing on a friend's mother? Do they forgive and forget to keep the peace for appearance sake?

  62. If you google Track Palin and School Bus Vandalism, his name is discussed, but since this happened in 2005 and he was 16, he was described in the press as an "unidentified minor." The older boys who were involved were punished; it is rumored that Track was sent out of state (Michigan) to finish high school (and play hockey). After he was "injured," he returned to Alaska, don't know if he ever finished high school, and then, he was off to Iraq.

  63. @anon 5:09, Katy Couric award. Our family was in London last October, shortly after Katy's famous interview with Sarah Palin. My daughter and son-in-law looked up a college friend, and we all met for lunch. The college friend has been working in London for Reuters, the British news wire service. Of all of the topics on her mind, the friend wanted to talk about Katy Couric!

Until that interview, Katy was viewed by the international news community as a lighweight, someone fluffy and nice. Then, they watched Sarah Palin's debut, and the fact that no reporter was able to do much to show Sarah for what she was (a lightweight, a piece of fluff). The entire Reuters staff were literally blown away by what Katy Couric was able to show about the very shallow candidate that was running for Vice President. She said that the You Tube video of the Couric interviews were passed around endlessly, not only in London but throughout their news network and other news organizations. Sarah's reputation was cemented throughout the reporting world.

If Sarah feels that she has been treated unfairly by the press, I would recommend that she review her poor performance on CBS. Staff for the McCain campaign complained that Sarah refused to prepare for the interview with Katy. And, in the past, Sarah may have been able to get away with those cute, evasive answers and charm. But, the Reuters crew were in awe of the way that Couric kept politely repeating the unanswered question, "What exactly do you read to inform your world opinion?"

Later, when Sarah got a chance to "get back at Katy" (Elan Frank interview??) Sarah played the mean girl from high school with her gotcha retort, "You're not the center of the world, Katy." Sorry, Sarah, but for a while in October, on You Tube and at Reuters, Katy was the center of the news world, and they applauded her.

"Can't she copyright or patent her name, image and any likeness of either to put an end to this crap?"

    ReplyDelete
  65. From the Washington Post:

In August, Palin's staff was notified by a Northern Virginia Republican operative that McDonnell no longer wanted help, Stapleton said.

Later that month, a staffer from Palin's PAC personally handed a $2,500 check to McDonnell at a Virginia fundraiser, Stapleton said. She said Palin also planned to donate the expense of her travel from Alaska to Virginia for a future campaign event.

Last month, Stapleton said she contacted the RGA to reiterate Palin's commitment to help McDonnell.

"Make no mistake, the Governor will move mountains if the campaign wishes," Stapleton said.
