"CafePress" reverses their decision and now sells " Pray for Obama - Psalm 109:8" products again - "Zazzle" withdraws these products - UPDATE

FINAL UPDATE:

See my new post - CafePress has now also decided to withdraw the "Obama Psalm 109:8" products!

+++

Yesterday I posted a blog about the new "Pray for Obama - Psalm 109:8" right-wing products which are the latest craze amongst the wingnuts and are for sale for example on "CafePress". In this blog, I explained the religious background of the psalm, after being alerted by a segment on Rachel Maddow where this issue was being discussed.

On Rachel Maddow, Frank Schaeffer gave a passionate plea to stop these religious extremists who in barely coded messages express their hope that President Obama would somehow ...well... be removed from office, whatever it takes.

Psalm 109:8 stickers were on sale also on this anti-Obama and pro-Palin website, at which the products are provided by CafePress, but then disappeared from the website at a later point yesterday. They are still not available again on this website.

So it seemed that CafePress had taken the right steps and banned these hateful products.

Unfortunately, this turned out to be wrong.

CafePress today sent around the following statement:

Dear ...,

Thank you for contacting CafePress.com!

Cafepress looks at content on a case by case basis, and makes decisions about what content is permissible based on our content usage policy.

Anti-presidential gear has been a mainstay at Cafepress since we were founded in 1999 and has become a key component of political discourse. Our site has become a cultural barometer of public opinion and as such designs often come into question. In managing our content we are trying to protect self expression, while making sure we are not advocating violence.

We initially pulled the Psalm 109:8 content from our products today because broader media dialog indicated that these designs potentially suggested violence towards the president. Based on current public discourse and further review of the actual content, we have determined that it is fair political commentary and we are in the process of reinstating this merchandise. As with all of our content, these designs will continue to be reviewed and if at any time their meaning is construed as advocating violence we will revisit our decision.

So that's "fair public commentary" then?

Funny, that's also what this guy here believes - he also has no hesitation to speak out what these Christian extremists REALLY think - he explains what Psalm 109 REALLY means to him:

Because what they think is that Psalm 109:8 has to be seen in context with Psalm 109:9, which reads:

“Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”

The "Obama Psalm 109:8" products are back on the CafePress website - here is a screenshot I just made (click to enlarge):

Well - what "CafePress" should pray for is that no lunatic will wear one of their "Psalm 109:8" t-shirts while trying to assassinate President Obama!

Fortunately, their competitor "Zazzle" has decided differently. They issued a statement on Wednesday which read:

Statement on Psalm 109 Products
By zazzlemike

Dear Zazzle Member or Concerned Citizen—

Today, there has surfaced a great deal of discussion and debate over certain products in the Zazzle Marketplace which reference text from Psalm 109 in combination with reference to President Barack Obama. We at Zazzle are aware of the issue, and would like to take this opportunity to respond in a unified and public fashion to all parties and viewpoints.

Zazzle puts great value on its Marketplace as a forum for discussion and debate of the issues of our day. We are proud of the fact that no matter how arcane or apparently esoteric a subject may be, there can often be found Zazzle products pertaining to it. We are particularly sensitive to Zazzle as an open forum for the expression and debate of political viewpoints. The rigorous debate and discussion of political issues, including candidates for political office, our elected leaders, and pending and actual legislation, is something that drives the very democracy that in turn allows for our freedom as citizens to make these expressions in the first place.

With that in mind, it is only after great thought that we have determined that these products, in the context of the full text of Psalm 109, may be interpreted in such a way as to suggest physical harm to the President of the United States. In deference to the Office of the President of the United States, and in accordance with federal law prohibiting the making of threats against the physical wellbeing of the President of the United States, Zazzle has therefore determined that these products are in violation of the Zazzle User Agreement and not appropriate for inclusion in the Zazzle Marketplace. We have begun efforts to remove them from our website, and we will be vigilant to the publication of similar products moving forward.

Zazzle will continue to allow and encourage the submission of products that express disapproval or approval of the President’s policies and actions, but Zazzle will not permit products that may be interpreted to suggest violence toward the President.

Sincerely,
The Zazzle Team

Therefore, there is an alternative to "CafePress", and these people are actually using their brains. Well done, Zazzle!

UPDATE:

It took a little while until all "Obama Psalm 109:8" products had been removed from Zazzle (see the comments in the lively discussion on Daily Kos). It appears that Zazzle had acted swiftly after being alerted of some remaining "Obama Psalm 109:8" products. The search with the words "Psalm 109" on the Zazzle website shows that apparently all of the controversial products are gone now:

On the CafePress website, the same search reveals that all the "Obama Psalm 109:8" products are still available on CafePress.

This is very bad judgement on part of CafePress, and also incredibly naive. If anything happens to President Obama, it is possible that people will blame them, too.

Thank you for this important post, Patrick! I have written to Cafe Press and explained why I will be boycotting them now and in the future. I am in the process of writing all my family and friends.

Did they sell materials which advocated violence against the previous administration in code? If so, I would not have purchased merchandise from them in the past.

It is not a partisan issue. It is an issue of civics and basic humanity.

  5. It's important for people to know that there is an alternative to using cafepress.

I think that cafepress should have taken the high road and opted to protect the President rather than taking the low road and thinking of their profits.

  6. It's telling, I think, that the Newsweek cover controversy isn't Palin's first. When the magazine ran an extreme close-up picture of the former governor last year, conservatives criticised the publication for not airbrushing out Palin's flaws. Newsweek pointed out that Photoshopping pictures are for fashion spreads, not political cover stories, and that the picture represented the candidate as she was. And this presents the general problem with Palin today – she's upset that people won't airbrush away who she really is, and that no one believes her when she tries to do the same.

  9. OT,
but I have to agree, 02:46, you're right! They are ticked off that she did not get the electronic "wite-out" on that one... More and more "Wite-out Palin" seems the appropriate name for Palin. Her yahoo phone accounts yet another example of Palin using wite-out on her activities. Same with charging herself with an ethics violation so she could have her cronies wite-out her ethical lapse...

Isn't it interesting how her fans area always getting upset about Sarah's iconic image? She is only to be portrayed as an image of perfection. Like an idol.

Must see if there are some good anti-Palin items on zazzle. Or anti-Paliban would be even better...

  14. I just checked out her photos at the Runner's World website. (I'm a glutton for punishment) I think the running outfits that she is wearing might be as revealing as Levi's 'porn' shoot. Very tight in the lady area.

I'm sure she was just thrilled to be modeling for a magazine, but did not realize that the photos might be used for other purposes. I don't think she can connect the dots in situations like these.

Sorry to those people who are gagging at the thought of SP's lady parts.

  15. According to Rachel, Zazzle won't sell goods which can be interpreted as inciting violence against the president. Cafe Press has resumed selling the crap. I think a screen shot of their merchandise, along with the Bible verse they reference be forward to the Justice Department for inciting a hate crime. (There has never been this level of hate directed towards any previous presidents. There must be something about this guy that inspires this new call to violence...I wonder what that could be????)

  21. OT, but I just read this at DU re the week Trig would have been conceived if he were Sarah's:

"It just so happens that that same week the following items were announced by the Palins:

August 30, 2007 - Sarah Palin decides to reside full time in Wasilla rather than Juneau

    http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_action=l...

August 22, 2007 - Todd Palin returns to job with BP Alaska because the family needs money

    http://www.kfqd.com/node/3608 "

This is VERY odd. Sarah decides to rule from home while Todd leaves and she gets pregnant even at her age in the one day before he left?

    Odd.

odd. Who did she feel she needed to control? Why did she come home? Was Todd cheating on her? Did she decide to "have" (adopt) a baby to keep him?

  22. A note to our new brave friend, Valley KW: Thanks so much for your contribution at the end of the last thread. What is really interesting is that the story that may or may not be true regarding Sarah, Todd and Track-- that sounds exactly like the Bristol story line. People have offered the idea that Bristol may not have know which boy friend was responsible for her being pregnant, hence the need for prenatal testing of some kind. It could be that Sarah (and Todd) selected Levi as the easiest candidate to manipulate. He is good looking, and the family had issues that made him easy to control. (Sherry's sentencing is supposed to be tomorrow, speaking of a hold on that family). The question is: Does history repeat itself?

I was also wondering if you know anything about Sarah's upbringing, besides that famous basketball story. Just wondering if there was anything in her past that accounts for her behavior today.

Thanks so much for your contributions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @anon 4:00 So much for Sarahin Aug.2007. What was Bristol doing that August? Remember the emails that were posted here some time ago, Bristol complaining that her mother overheard her talking on the phone and suspected that she (Bristol) was pregnant. Punishment was to take away Bristol's phone. Wasn't that also the summer of 2007?

Levi couldn't understand how she could be pregnant from Todd since he was not aware they had that type of relationship from Todd's lounger in the living room. Bristol told Levi things and none of it computed to baby making.

  31. Frankly, I find many more of the anti-Obama products at Cafe Press more offensive than the Psalm 109:8 ones.

    Why? Two reasons:

    1) These other ones more directly imply, in effect, "We hate our duly elected president."

    2) Not many people get the Psalm 108:9 reference, and even fewer will bother to look it up if they don't.

  37. From the AP tonight:

The U.S. Army now says it will allow media limited access to Sarah Palin's appearance at Fort Bragg.

Army officials had said they would prohibit coverage of Palin's on-post event, saying it would turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama.

The Associated Press and The Fayetteville Observer objected and the military changed its position slightly on Thursday night. It will grant a pool of reporters restricted access to Monday's appearance.

Fort Bragg spokesman Col. Billy Buckner said members of the media will not be allowed to interview the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and will be barred from talking to her supporters on post.

Buckner said the setup will allow reporters their right to access while preventing the event from turning political.

    Here is what I wrote:
Question: The "Obama Psalm 109:8" products are back on your CafePress website -WHY?
There are radical so-called "Christain" pastors who avow:
Psalm 109:8 has to be seen in context with Psalm 109:9, which reads:
“Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”
Google this fact and SEE statements and videos of these statements from clergy!

I think that cafepress should have taken the high road and opted to protect the President rather than taking the low road and thinking of their profits.
Shame on you. I will NEVER do business with Cafe Press again, and I am alerting all of my contacts.
This is NOT a partisan issue - I am not a Democrat and if this sort of product appeared during President Bush's term, I would be equally outraged.

    2. CALL Fort Bragg. Be POLITE. This is what I said.
Sarah Palin repeatedly criticizes the Commander In Chief , saying he is dithering and endangering our troops. Please do not let her to do her book signing tour on your Military base.

    1. Palin told Sean Hannity that the USA should "PROFILE" Muslims in the Military.

    2. She has made disparaging remarks about the Commander In Chief

    3. Since when does the military let politicians "promote themselves" on bases that are funded by the U.S. taxpayers?

Since some are deleted, we know there ARE Moderators, therefore, those that remain against the President can be seen to be endorsed by Palin.

There are also many links to offensive websites ... which can also be seen to be endorsed by Palin. She is the de facto leader of the

Xtian Taliban that Shaeffer was talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Britsy Bluebell, just got back and saw your comment. These days it can take a while to "make the rounds" of my favorite blogs - traffic is way up!

I wouldn't be surprised to have the 'wite-out' people come around wanting us to knock off using the name of their product to describe Palin - might not want their reputation lowered like that ;-)

For some reason I was just getting the mental image of Wite-out Palin sitting at the table with her crew of helpers seated with her, kind of like the Waltons at dinner. Except instead of food, they have big piles of email to scrub, and Sarah saying "Todd, would you pass me that wite-out, gotta 'nother bad one here". No wonder hardly any of the FOIA requests have been fulfilled.

If she ever gets that far, I am NOT letting up on the wite-out issue, even if they make us call it liquid eraser. It's not as catchy, but it still gets the point across. Sarah's "wite-out bill" story has got to be either a complete fabrication, or little Miss Wite-out was the one who did the alteration of the bill.

Normally I would think an abortion was no one else's business, but not when the person who seems to be hiding something they did is willing to take that choice away from everyone else.

  46. @ C'mon Levi,
I am certainly not "in the know" about the inner planning of this "book tour", but the reason I keep putting it in quotes is because the press has been reporting that this "tour" is very much like a "campaign".

Examples of reasons they gave for that conclusion:

-bus looks like a campaign bus, with her picture and branding.
-she has advance people at the locations, just like a campaign
-she is disembarking the bus onto a stage, greeting the crowd in her typical campaigning garb: red blazer, black skirt, high heel pumps
-Trig has apparently recovered from his sniffles sufficiently to be carried out by her when she greets the crowd on the stage, before she hands him off to an aide. So she's back to using him as a prop...
-police officers hired for crowd control
-the cities and states she is going to are NOT typical book tour cities, but instead are battlegrounds from the last election, and she started in Michigan, the state she was so unhappy that the campaign pulled out of
-the bus has the SarahPac logo and info on the side and donations are suggested
-she is apparently bringing along some of the people who were loyal staffers for the VP section of the McCain campaign
-she is doing a media blitz of interviews that seem to promote her future possible political ambitions just as much as they promote the book.
-many people are showing up for the book signings wearing "Sarah for President" "Sarah 2012" and similar T-shirts and other swag promoting Sarah for president.
-oh, and one more thing: in the stop today she has suddenly started using her more "folksy" accent, which had gone missing in the Oprah and BW interviews.

It would be interesting to know just how this tour is getting paid for: publisher, some split with the publisher, or perhaps SarahPac. After all, she doesn't really need a bus or advance staff etc to do a book tour... And it seems like if this IS being paid for by a PAC, that could make it even more inappropriate for her to be taking the tour to Fort Bragg.

I am with you. I don't know why she is being allowed to even enter Fort Bragg. Soldiers aren't supposed to be involved in overtly political activities, and I suspect that there is a fear that some soldiers violate this and that the press would capture it on tape. But it makes NO sense that the press somehow would turn it into a partisan event. It makes a lot more sense to keep her out of there if they think it could turn into grandstanding against the Commander in Chief. If military discipline is really so poor that they have fears of grandstanding against President Obama, something needs to be done about it, and the last thing they need is a visit from somebody who stirs the pot the way Wite-out Palin does.

And don't even get me started on her wanting to go to Fort Hood... That is so inappropriate at this time I can't stand to think about it.

  47. You need to check out my post about some of the Palinbot discontent over their 'treatment' at yesterday's signing! One Palinbot says they waited for 12 1/2 hours, because they were given 'hope' that they would be able to meet Sarah, but reached the conclusion that they were just lied to so there would be a big crowd there for Sarah's arrival!

It's pretty funny! Though to be honest, it's hard to be feel sorry for a nutcase who would stand in line in the cold with 3 kids for 12 1/2 hours just to see Sarah!

  51. There is a new development in this Palin Army Base controversy:

    Palin Army controversy

A Fort Bragg spokesman initially said the Army would ban the media from Palin's book signing next week, fearing it would turn into political grandstanding against President Barack Obama. After The Associated Press and The Fayetteville Observer protested, Col. Billy Buckner said the post would permit restricted access.

A small pool of reporters will be allowed to view and document the event but will be barred from the interviews. The public will be allowed.

AP Associate General Counsel Dave Tomlin called the proposed pools and restrictions on interviews "unlawful and unacceptable."

"If Army regulations forbid 'political events', the Army should have considered that before allowing Palin to hold a public autograph session for a political book on the base," Tomlin said.

Palin has agreed not to give a speech, McCollum said. Palin will sign her new book for people and will not stop to pose for photographs, officials said.

  56. When people write to Zazzle or Cafepress urging removal of offensive and dangerous "Psalm 109" products, they should remind (politely) that Secret Service or FBI might be directed to their sites. No one would want that kind of headache.

  58. "Pastor" Steven Anderson is that idiotic Right Wingnut who taunted the Border Police in Arizona (with video camera in tow) so many times that they finally arrested him for resisting inspection of his vehicle.

For about a week he was the poster boy for the Pharasitical Patri-Idiotical "Resistance," before they moved onto other idols. There is an unending supply of self-absorbed fakey patriots in this country, they are as plentiful and fungible as toilet paper.

A person that writes as poorly as the above should realize that their artistic advice might be mocked.

  60. Guys, if you are prepared to be nauseated enough to skip breakfast/lunch, go look at the 20/20 teaser article on ABC news.

I am serious about being nauseated.

I'm so effin sick of poor Trig being exploited.

  61. I have to make a comment on the way everyone keeps generalizing the Republican party. Palin is not an republican. She is only using it as a cloak. I have republican friends whom totally disapprove of the Palin, Rush, Beck rhetoric. In fact they tell me it is embarrassing to the party. Yes they voted McCain because of their fear of losing their guns. We recently spoke about the health care reform bill, and until I painted the picture of what I pay for health care, they all wish they could pay the same. Knowledge is power. There is no hope for the extreme christians, and again not all christians share their positions. Palin will fall, and when she does she will take the others down with her. Lets talk about the lies in her book, and the wite-out. She is trying to distract us by talking nonsense politics. The witeout story is a cover-up for someone getting ready to let the cat out of the bag. Please stay focused on what makes her nervous. I do believe she had an abortion! No medical billing specialist would send a wited-out bill. So either she did it herself, or she is making it up to gain sympathy. Either way she is mentally ill. So what else is new, she was for abortion before she was against it!

  62. I agree that the thing to do is focus on her inconsistencies and the WTF moments engendered by the wild-ride and wite-out stories.

"Miscarriage" is not a medical procedure ... she writes that it appeared in a box describing which procedure she had undergone.

  63. "If it looks like a duck..."

IMFO, she is campaigning. Have you ever seen a book tour with baby props or that looks anything close to this? Those bus rides aren't cheap.

It looks like she will be taking her "profiling" spiel directly to Ft. Hood.

Whoever addresses what goes on with the PACs should be working over time.

Her corporate look is ugly and I sure hope someone has the spine to take her on soon. There is not an ounce of "little ol' me" left in her, she is a total sell-out.

  65. UPDATE - GOOD NEWS JUST IN FROM CAFE PRESS!!

    "Thank you for contacting CafePress.com!

This morning we made the decision to remove all Psalms 109:8 designs from CafePress.

The public debate started with questioning if the design was simply intended to be criticism of the President or something much worse. The discourse was surprisingly civil online, given the heated nature of the topic. Given that, and the positions of groups like the ACLU and the Anti-Defamation League, we decided to let the dialogue play out publicly before making a final decision.

Last night we posted a poll on our blog, read through the emails we’ve received and weighed the nature of the calls we’ve received on the topic. In the process we also learned that many of the original designers of the Psalm 109:8 designs had already decided to remove them on their own.

General consensus has proven that the design does point to a broader interpretation of the Psalm and thus has been deemed inappropriate for sale at CafePress.

We try to create an atmosphere of self-expression. Many of the things we encounter are not black and white, but grey. When the dialogue is civil, we want to let the larger community work things out rather than making an uninformed ruling. The dialogue has played out and common sentiment has reached agreement – this merchandise is not appropriate.

Thank you all for your input."
