TexasGal2009 sent me this lovely joke. Poor God... his mind boggled.
GOD said: "Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles."
St. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.
GOD: Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures.. Do these Suburbanites re ally want all that grass growing there?
ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each Spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.
GOD: The Spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.
ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week.
GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay?
ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.
GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?
ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.
GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?
ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir.
GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the Summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.
ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.
GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life.
ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.
GOD: No! What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the Winter to keep the soil moist and loose?
ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.
GOD: And where do they get this mulch?
ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.
GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?
ST. CATHERINE: 'Dumb and Dumber', Lord. It's a story about...
GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis!
Thanks, TexasGal, it 's a good one.

Sarah Palin's Journey So Far
Our dear Sarah Palin has been very quiet and there are no major news, apart from the "get even" sequel to her previous books, this time "written" by Bristol.
I had a bit of time on my hands, so I put together a presentation of some of Sarah Palin's finest moments, set to music, so there's no screeching at all.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did while making it.
For some funny (but serious) reading, try this Newsweek article. (H/T to MW)
Here's a recent article about Sarah Palin's One Nation publicity/educational/vacation bus tour.

Emmy Awards for Sarah Palin's Alaska? Too ridiculous for words!
I have to leave you with an overnight post. This is just too ridiculous...
From Alaska Dispatch:
According to the Los Angeles Times' "Awards Tracker" blog, the TLC network has nominated its television-reality series "Sarah Palin's Alaska" for consideration in four Emmy Awards categories: cinematography, picture editing, music composition and best reality program. Before the show can be called an official "Emmy nominee," however, a first round of voting by academy members must be completed to choose from all the initial entries. The awards gala will be held in September, and the nominees should be chosen sometime in July.
These people must be joking. Sarah Palin's Alaska was an excruciatingly bad reality show. If they had focused on the beauty of Alaska instead of Sarah Palin's attempts at doing anything and everything, had left out her ungracious mocking of various people (including a neighbour and Michelle Obama), if it had not been narrated by that screechy voice, if her classless family had not been part of it, well, if it had been a completely different show, perhaps they could have had an honest shot at an award for cinematography. Alaska lends itself to some very dramatic and breathtaking shots.
Sarah Palin's show was in very bad taste, dishonest, and ultimately boring. Alaska was insulted in this stupid series, as was our intelligence.
Do me a favour!

Open Thread - Tuesday
Today is the summer solstice and all around France they celebrate with the "Fete de la Musique." People of all nationalities take to the streets, bars and salles des fetes and play music!
I found a video where an American tourist relates her experiences during the Fete de la Musique in Paris, 2007.
I would like to share some Brazilian music, performed by a favourite of mine.
Enjoy the music and the summer!

Sarah Palin's visit to Sudan
Is Sarah Palin is going on another Evangelical mission, this time to Sudan? Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse is very active there, rebuilding churches, exactly what the people of Sudan need.
She started her Evangelical Circus career closer to home, in Western Alaska, where she dished out cookies and religious pamphlets to people who needed money, fuel and real food. She flew there in Franklin Graham's private jet.
Then she went to Haiti, one year after the earthquake that devastated the country, where she handed out toys and religious pamphlets to children who needed homes, food and health care. She went with Franklin Graham, off course.
Next, she managed to pray and feel blessed in Alabama, courtesy of Samaritan's Purse. She happened to be in the area, taking money from a special needs organization to spout her usual platitudes about Trig being the best thing that happened in her life.
It has not been confirmed that Sarah will be going to Southern Sudan with Franklin Graham, or what she's hoping to achieve with this trip, but something tells me they might be spotted together at some point.
Whether she goes with Graham or not, I join the chorus of the many people who, on hearing of Sarah Palin's visit to Sudan, reacted with a horrified "Haven't the Sudanese suffered enough?"
