Sarah Palin's speech in Wisconsin: Trig's pregnancy story (revised version)

Sarah Palin spoke yesterday in West Allis (Milwaukee County) having been invited by "Wisconsin Right For Life". Like in Sarah's speech in Evansville, Indiana in April 2009, it was again a speech which heavily featured one of Sarah's most favourite subjects to talk about: Trig. There were some revealing details which she gave yesterday. For the first time we received an insight into Sarah Palin's "revised pregnancy story" which she undoubtedly will present in greater detail in her upcoming book - because apparently she discovered that the "first story" contains some "holes", and now, in her mega-selling book, they need to be filled.

We have not only one, but two accounts about what was said yesterday in Wisconsin - we don't have the exact wording, because in typical Palin fashion, recordings were not permitted. The "Sarah Palin Truth Squad" has an impressive list of all the items which were not permitted to take into the venue - "transparency" has never been Sarah Palin's greatest virtue. I guess she will put out a facebook version soon!

What we have so far is a "long version" of the speech in Wisconsin as reported in Mudflats. In this version, the relevant parts about "The Trig story" are described as follows:

"Two years ago I had an ultra sound. I was 12 weeks along. The technician said she saw boy parts. I was like, yes, what could be better than a little baby boy? Then she said the baby’s neck was thicker than usual. I was like yes, that’s great. Then I thought, oh oh. I recall the fear, knowing what a thick neck may mean. More tests. My baby had Down Syndrome. What is amazing is who this child is. My family’s life is so much richer because of this beautiful baby boy named Trig. He’s awesome! Groups like this affirm the value of every life.

That is what I had to hold onto – that seed of faith—when I was afraid.

We know that 80-90% of Down Syndrome babies are aborted. They’re aborted because they live in a society of some people’s idea of perfection, not God’s.

Talks about Bristol and how she’s faced challenges as well, but chose life.

Today I thank God for all of these circumstances. I never thought I’d be asked to walk the walk. It took me a while to get there through my pregnancy. I asked God and I asked Todd, “Why us?” Todd said, “Why not us?”

I want to help you help people to be less afraid and make this world more welcoming for every baby."

The second, shorter account is from the Milwaukee publication JSOnline. In there, it says:

"Palin spoke movingly of her youngest son, Trig, who has Down syndrome. She recalled that when she was pregnant, she underwent an ultrasound and the technician told her, "I see boy parts."

Later, the technician told her that the baby's neck "is a little bit thicker," an indication that there might be an extra chromosome. A few days later, Down syndrome was confirmed.

"I was scared," Palin said, adding that she asked her husband, Todd, "Why us?" He responded, "Why not?"

"My family life is much richer thanks to this beautiful baby boy Trig," Palin said. "He is awesome."

So what is the problem here?

Well, the original pregnancy story read a bit differently, and there was an obvious need to "fill some gaps". That's what Sarah Palin now attempts to do, and we will certainly see this in its full glory in her new book.

Fortunately, we have a very detailed account of the "original version" of the pregnancy story, written by Lorenzo Benet in his biography "Trailblazer". Lorenzo Benet did not "make this up" - far from it. In the description of "Trailblazer", the following is reported:

"People magazine assistant editor Lorenzo Benet met with Sarah Palin and her family just weeks before the announcement that she would be the Republican vice-presidential nominee. He spoke in depth with Governor Palin; with her husband, Todd, the "First Dude," as he likes to call himself; with her children; and with other members of her extended family."

In "Trailblazer", starting on page 181, Benet said:

"Sarah kept mum about the pregnancy until October.

Todd had figured it out but was discreet enough not to say a word. When Sarah finally gave him the great news, she said with a shrug, "Life is full of surprises", she told People magazine. Todd was ecstatic. He had already wanted another son, friends said, and his oldest boy had just signed up for a stint in the Army, and the country was in the middle of a war. There was no telling what might happen if Track were called to serve in the theater, which he eventually was.

For the next five months, Todd and Sarah kept the pregnancy a secret. Any thoughts of breaking the news early to their kids were scuttled when Sarah learned her baby had Down syndrome after having amniocentesis at thirteen weeks. Todd was away working when her family doctor, Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, called with the news. Sarah drove over to Johnson's office, discussed the implications, and received some reading material on the disorder. Then she headed home to ponder her fate.

Over the next couple of days, she read everything she could on the disorder. (...) Some children cannot speak until age four, and half of the infants are born with a hole in the heart, as was the case with Trig. If the holes don't close, surgery is often required (Trig, fortunately, avoided surgery).

(...) There was never any question about keeping the baby, and Sarah explained later that the one reason she did amnio was simply to be prepared for any eventuality. It was time, she said, to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

When Todd returned from his trip, she broke the news to him gently during a quiet moment at home. Tears welling in her eyes, she said: "The good news is we have a boy. But we have a challenge." Unwavering in his support, Todd said: "Awesome! I am getting another boy."

It may not have been part of their plan, the couple believed, but certainly it was part of a greater plan. "Why not us?", Todd said. Sarah continued keeping her secret from the public and her children. Not discussing the pregnancy with her daughters, she felt, would shorten the process for them and spare them from unwanted attention. "I didn't want Alaskans to fear I would not be able to fulfil my duties", she told People."

Therefore, the "ultrasound story" which Sarah presented in Wisconsin is brand new. Doesn't it sound sooo much better now? Conveniently, we don't know the "exact" wording of what Sarah has said in Wisconsin.

Clearly, the account of Lorenzo Benet that "Sarah explained later that the one reason she did the amnio was simply to be prepared for any eventuality" doesn't go along at all with the version that Sarah presented in Wisconsin, because there she gave the impression that indications for Down syndrome had been discovered during an ultrasound and that further testing was basically a necessity back then.

But we have another "problem", and this doesn't directly result from her speech in Wisconsin, but from the speech that Sarah Palin gave in Indiana on April 16, 2009. Sarah said back then:

"I had found out that I was pregnant while out of state first, at an oil and gas conference. While out of state, there just for a fleeting moment, wow, I knew, nobody knows me here, nobody would ever know. I thought, wow, it is easy, could be easy to think, maybe, of trying to change the circumstances. No one would know. No one would ever know.

"Then when my amniocentesis results came back, showing what they called abnormalities. Oh, dear God, I knew, I had instantly an understanding for that fleeting moment why someone would believe it could seem possible to change those circumstances. Just make it all go away and get some normalcy back in life. Just take care of it. Because at the time only my doctor knew the results, Todd didn't even know. No one would know. But I would know. First, I thought how in the world could we manage a change of this magnitude. I was a very busy governor with four busy kids and a husband with a job hundreds of miles away up on the North Slope oil fields. And, oh, the criticism that I knew was coming. Plus, I was old . . .

"So we went through some things a year ago that now lets me understand a woman's, a girl's temptation to maybe try to make it all go away if she has been influenced by society to believe that she's not strong enough or smart enough or equipped enough or convenienced enough to make the choice to let the child live. I do understand what these women, what these girls go through in that thought process."

Wait a second!

In the "Trailblazer" book it was reported in great detail that Todd already knew about the pregnancy before the testing was done, However, in the speech in Indiana, Sarah gives the impression that "Todd didn't even know" - but what didn't he know about? The result of the amniocentesis or the fact that Sarah was pregnant? Well, her remark wouldn't make much sense if she was just talking about the fact that Down syndrome had been discovered, because when she first said in the speech "No one would know. No one would ever know" she clearly refers to the fact alone that she was pregnant. Therefore, when she said a few sentences later "Todd didn't even now. No one would know. No one would ever know" connects to her previous remark, and the only possible interpretation in my view is that she wanted to express there that Todd didn't know about the pregnancy when the amniocentesis was done.

Therefore one of the two versions has to be false. Which is fascinating, because it appears that Lorenzo Benet's account is based on what Sarah had told him herself in his capacity as journalist for People magazine.

I am curious to see what the full version in her book will be.

As usual, Sarah's advice "quit making things up" doesn't apply to herself. Sarah's pregnancy didn't happen. None of this did happen. It is made up. Sarah Palin is a liar, and not a very good one, either.

Andrea Gusty (KTVA) interviews Levi Johnston and Rex Butler - and goes rogue! - UPDATE: Conan O'Brien reads the real Levi!

Levi Johnston and Rex Butler were interviewed today by a familiar face to us - Andrea Gusty from the Alaska channel KTVA, who has been guaranteed a safe place in the history of Trig Truthing through the "Gusty pictures", the infamous Palin pregnancy pictures which attempted to kill the faked pregnancy rumours in September 2008.

Andrea Gusty asked Levi and Rex questions about the unfortunate controversy surrounding the fake Levi Johnston twitter account: The fact that William Shatner recited on Conan parts of those faux twitter messages and made Levi look like a "racially insensitive pothead" (tmz).

The makers of Conan should probably have read palingates, because it has been mentioned several times here in the comments that those twitter comments couldn't possibly have been made by Levi.

The answers that Levi and Rex gave regarding the twitter controversy were not very surprising, although Levi's statement at the end "You cannot believe everything you believe on TV, unless it comes straight from the guys mouth" gave me a little chuckle. Does this mean we have to believe everything which comes "straight out of Levi's mouth"? I will leave this question open.

However, there is a surprise: Andrea Gusty tries to be a critical journalist and "goes rogue"! She suddenly switches topics and starts to ask Levi about the "dirt he has on Sarah Palin". Shock! Levi doesn't answer, just turns his head to Rex and gives him a look as if to say "You better handle that!", and Rex then rebukes Andrea Gusty in reminding her that she came to his office "for the twitter thing", and not to ask questions about anything else. Andrea Gusty then duly apologises, but I would like to remark: Respect, Andrea! I just hope that you would be equally brave if it comes to interviewing Sarah Palin again! Andrea Gusty's "going rogue moment" was apparently so shocking for KTVA that they didn't include it in the transcript of the interview.

I am also not sure how happy Levi was when Andrea Gusty mentioned to Levi that he would "probably be a celebrity for a while". Ouch!

No honorable mention however deserves the person who recorded the sound, because he thoroughly screwed up - you need some powerful loudspeakers to properly understand what is being said in the interview.

In the meantime, Conan has apologized to Levi Johnston today on his show.

What I don't understand is: Why didn't Levi give a humorous response to Conan and then use this opportunity to go on his show afterwards, thus making new friends and getting lots of new positive publicity? Don't mess with the late-night-show-brigade! He could have learned this lesson from Sarah Palin's run-in with Letterman.

UPDATE: Conan O'Brien reads the real Levi!

Please note: I was told that the video of the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien below might not play with Firefox. If this is the case, then please go directly to NBC.

As I said, this probably could have been handled a bit differently by the Johnston's camp, as Conan has managed to get a few more digs in about Levi's upcoming photoshoot.

Levi, it's time to bare your soul, not your body! ;-)

Open Thread - Sarah Palin Comedy Relief

After so many heavy thoughts about pregnancies, religious nuts etc. during the last few days, it is time for some comedy. Therefore, here is some light relief for you - enjoy!

This is one of my all time Palin-comededy favourites - the "Daily Show" visits Wasilla ("real America") and tries to find out what the Mayor of Wasilla actually does:

Some of our readers have wondered how Sarah Palin will perform in the Oprah interview. Well, we all know how the journalist-graduate loves to bypass those questions. Here are some examples.

The real interview of Sarah Palin with Charlie Gibson is pretty funny - the parody version is even better:

Remember when Sarah Palin tried to beat America into submission by winking furiously during the Vice-Presidential debate? The parody again comes pretty close to the real thing:

If this wasn't enough comedy for you, then here are two more videos I would like to show you - just click on the links:

The legendary SNL parody which compares the "parody Katie Couric interview" to the real interview.

Last but not least, allow me to leave the Sarah we all "love to hate" and present to you this parody version of the Obama - McCain Presidential debate.

Sarah Palin's faked pregnancy: More questions added to the puzzle - Update: Levi Johnston on "The Insider", part 2

There is no day without excitement for those who care about the affairs of Sarah Palin. Politically, the self-destruction continues. The Democrat Bill Owens in the NY-23 district wouldn't have won the election yesterday, hadn't Sarah Palin intervened and driven the Republican Dede Scozzafava out of the race. It is probably a good thing that after Alaska had received an overdose and disposed itself of Queen Sarah (the Alaskan version of "Yes we can!"), the Lower 48 get a taste of the "real" Sarah Palin. It's a good thing, because now there is still the chance to draw the right conclusions and to stop the madness. The Republican Party should think closely if they really want a mentally-unbalanced, nasty and utterly selfish person to dominate their party.

There is another issue I would like address right now. I would like to be open and straighforward as always. Our colleague Gryphen has posted an article concerning babygate yesterday which understandably stirred up a lot of controversy and caused quite a lot of confusion amongst his and our readers.

"Okay so now that Levi has gone public with his statement that Trig is Sarah's baby, I can confirm that I knew Trig was not Bristol or Levi's baby for about six months now. And I know that is very confusing to those following "babygate" to digest. When I first heard that I was confused as well.

However afterward I heard another piece of information which went a long ways toward explaining what actually DID happen, and why Bristol was hidden away in Anchorage for so many months.

Levi knows this as well, but I don't think he is ready to talk about it yet. Until he, or another source in the know, explain this I cannot go any further. I am sorry, as I know how frustrating this is, but I made an agreement.

I will give you this hint, which I have mentioned in the past, the key to this mystery is in the birth dates.

So then the question remains, "Who IS Trig's biological mother?" And I have to admit that I STILL don't know. And I don't believe that the pool of people who DO know, is very large. I am not sure that even Bristol knows.

All I can say with any certainty is that Sarah Palin did NOT give birth to him on April 18, 2008!"

He later added this update:

Update: I decided to address some of the questions and criticisms here because it would be lost in the flurry of comments coming in today.

Somebody asked, Midnight Cajun I believe, WHY I did not say that Bristol was not Trig's mom back when I first heard it. To be honest, I had trouble accepting it. I walked around for a while trying to fit it in with what I had come to believe about "babygate". I went back to my source at least four times before I accepted it completely.

After that I did not originally post about it because NOBODY would have believed it. You can see today how hard it is for people to accept and that is after Levi has done these interviews and you have heard hints from me these last few months alluding to that fact. If I had just come out and said it, with NO confirmation from anybody, it would have been dismissed out of hand.

Now Kathleen asked why I said back on Sept. 2, "Just ask yourself this question, "When would Sarah Palin be most likely to fake a pregnancy and then adopt her daughter's baby? When she was mostly out of the public eye as the Governor of an "off the radar" state like Alaska? Or while standing on a stage in front of millions of possible voters and camera crews?"

This was in response to Levi's statement that Sarah wanted to adopt Tripp. I was not confirming that Trig was Bristol's baby, I was asking why Sarah would want to adopt her daughter's baby right when she was being considered for a VP pick? The talk about Sarah being a possible VP pick had already started before April 2008. If it was going to be a straight up adoption how would you explain taking on an infant while running to be the Vice President of the United States? And if you were planning to fake your own pregnancy would it not have made sense to do so before the national media was watching your every move? This was one of my first attempts to get people to start thinking about the birth dates.

There is a line of logic that continues on from the above paragraph. I cannot just come out in say it because that betrays my agreement. I apologize, but I also want you to keep in mind that if I HAD simply put everything I learned on this blog back in May or June I would NEVER have learned another thing. My sources would have never trusted me again. So when I tell you I am saying as much as I can, you are just going to have to accept that or decide to walk away. Your choice.

But do keep in mind what I have said in the past, and how much has been confirmed by Levi and other sources. There are a lot of facts and rumors that we know now that we certainly did not know back in the spring.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when Levi says he knows some HUGE things, he is not exaggerating one little bit. And there are others who are waiting in the wings as well. Author Joe McGinnis said that people in Wasilla could not wait to talk to him. And boy does HE have some stories to tell."

What I would like to say to Gryphen's comments is this:

I have the highest respect for Gryphen. He is the only one of the bloggers in Alaska who was willing to pick up babygate several months ago, and has done a lot to drive this issue forward. He has built up a great blog and gained a large readership. However, that does not mean that I agree with everything that he writes about "babygate", and yesterday was such a case.

Trig Truthing is an exciting, but also difficult exercise, and as many of you have experienced before, sometimes it can make your head hurt. Like yesterday. In my 12 months of being an active Trig Truther and belonging to a resourceful investigative team, I have learned that it is just far too easy to get confused about all the theories, to think round in circles and to get distracted by smokescreens that other people have created. Once the confusion starts, all the scenarios keep spinning round in your head and that makes it difficult to come to any meaningful conclusion about the whole "Trig-mystery".

What we have also have experienced is that evidence itself might be confusing or might be interpreted in different ways, and that it takes great patience and constant fact-checking with an open mind in order to meaningfully progress with the investigation. This was one of the main reasons why the Palindeception research team was formed in the first place in 2008: To have a group of dedicated people looking together at the evidence, giving open and critical assessments, before they are being published afterwards, or sometimes they are not published straight away at all because they need further clarification. After Palindeception stopped posting a few months ago, a new babygate research team was formed which is now working with palingates. To have such a group of people is invaluable, because it is just too easy to get lost - and at the times when frustration sets in, it is also much easier to stay focused if there is a group of people behind you who support your efforts.

Gryphen and I agree in one thing right now: Sarah Palin is not the biological mother of Trig. Regarding the other circumstances, I am afraid to say that don't know whether he is right or not, because I haven't seen his evidence. Let me say one important thing: We do not see this as a competition. I would be very happy for him if Gryphen is correct! He would certainly deserve to be the one who breaks the story. What particular evidence he has, I don't know. He hasn't told us, and I would never ask anyone to tell me his secrets. After Gryphen published his blogpost yesterday, I wrote him an email and offered to tell him what WE know, so that he could check it with his information, but I have received no reply so far. I am still very happy to do so. Gryphen and I are not in regular contact, we have exchanged a few emails during this year, but that's it.

The evidence we have received, circumstancial and direct evidence, strongly points to the fact the Bristol Palin was pregnant at the end of 2007. There were for example not only rumors reaching back to December 2007 that Bristol was pregnant, but there were also people in high positions claiming this as a FACT, including a top-member of the leadership of the Republican Party of Alaska. This is not the kind of evidence which one can just dismiss. If we want to dismiss this evidence, one would have to explain how it's possible that such important people in Alaska claim to know that it's true. Personally, I find the "deception within the deception" difficult to believe.

As it currently stands, I see it as a confirmed fact that Bristol was pregnant during the year 2007.

We don't know for a fact WHEN Bristol gave birth, although we have received some clues in the course of the investigation. It seems most likely right now that she has given birth in December 2007 or January 2008. As I understand it, Bristol possibly attended Anchorage West High for several months from January 2008 onwards, although the details are not finally confirmed. We had received several reports from people who saw Bristol in public in March 2008, non-pregnant. We also received credible reports that Bristol was upset and angry about the fact that Sarah announced her "pregnancy" at the beginning of March 2008.

I also don't know for a fact IF Bristol has given birth. She might have had an abortion or miscarried. The revelation of an abortion would of course be the "scandal of the century". Some readers have speculated that such an abortion might have been performed when Bristol went to New York together with Sarah in October 2007. All I can say is that so far we have no hints that such a scandalous scenario could be true.

What I can also say is that there have been deliberate, deceitful attempts to manipulate the babygate discussion in the past in order to drive us and others away from the Bristol theory and confuse everybody. These attacks continue right up until the present day. Just a few days ago, an old "friend" popped up again, who is well known from the old PD-days: The commenter "BlueTx". He claims to know "the gruesome truth" about babygate - apparently Bristol is not the mother, and we even should feel sorry about Sarah. He managed to confuse some people over here at palingates and at Immoral Minority both yesterday and today. However, we know a few things about BlueTx. He opened the blog "Palindeception2" at the beginning of 2009, where he started to ridicule PD. Fine, no problem. Shortly before that, "BlueTx" appeared on PD, slamming the fake pregnancy theories in his comments, which "BlueTx" subsequently deleted. When confronted with the fact that Kathleen claimed to know that "Thomas" was in fact "BlueTx", he categorically denied it. Unfortunately for him, it was pretty easy to prove that the two were the same, as both posters used the same blogger ID number, and finally he snarkily conceded it. "Thomas" later also admitted that he was "Whitedog" on PD. "Whitedog", in fact, shared the same blogger ID number with "AlaskaGrown" and "cupofnoodles", who were also commenters on PD. But they were all one person - "Thomas", the man who claims to know "the gruesome truth". Using those ID's he tried to manipulate the conversation, and God knows which other ID's he might have used. In reality, however, he knows only one thing: How to confuse people and how to lie when he is cornered.

Those kind of manipulative attempts to derail the discussion make me incredibly suspicious. We have good sources telling us that Bristol was pregnant. On the other hand, we have seen deceitful commenters on the blogs telling us that she was not. What should be the conclusion of that?

The conclusion in my opinion is that the evidence has to be double and triple checked. We also have to be aware that most of the Trig Truthing discussion - is it stands right now - is confined to only three blogs - Immoral Minority, Bree Palin and palingates. This is not a lot. If one of these blogs gets discredited, it would be a major blow to the overall "movement". Therefore, we have to be very careful, and I wish that there could be more exchange of information going on. I also think that it's not ideal when information is being put out in a seemingly cryptic way and not properly explained.

I also understand that for Gryphen it probably makes sense for him to present his findings in the way he does, because he believes that he has all the pieces of the puzzle he needs.

However, we have to be aware that we are on a hazardous road: Hopefully at some point we will get to the final truth, but there are also smokescreens, and it is very important to be able to recognize them. If Gryphen is annoyed about my remarks, all I can say is: Don't be! We are in the same boat here. If theories such as "Bristol is not the mother" are being presented, I would have really liked to have seen it presented within a more coherent storyline which would have made it more digestable.

Update: Here is the second part of Levi Johnston's appearance on "The Insider". He says at the end that if Sarah "shuts up", then he might shut up, too. I find this remark a bit surprising, because the odds are that Sarah Palin has dissed him in her book. So it's very unlikely that she will shut up. I also don't think that it's in her nature to shut up at this point.

Open thread - G'day from Melbourne

After our epic journey to Australia, we're beginning to feel a bit better from the jet lag.

The blogs are on fire, there's a lot going on! I haven't been able to read everything due to limited access to the internet, but I have the impression things are imploding in the Sarah Palin camp.

I'm glad Sarah's candidate lost in New York, it's very good to know that there are sensible people out there and common sense prevailed.

Levi seems to be very busy on the talk show circuit, but I don't think we'll hear anything terribly exciting from him. The Babygate discussion is very lively, but I personally think that identifying Trig's parents would be a bonus, what really matters is that Sarah Palin didn't give birth to him.

Patrick and Kathleen are doing a fantastic job, not only keeping the blog active, but adding a richer dimension to it. It's very odd being a reader of my own blog... I like it.

Celtic Diva has a must read post about the Juneteenth lawsuit and other bits and pieces. Don't miss it.

That's all for now, folks.

I'll keep following the discussions and say hello again soon.

No joke: Sarah Palin's Victory Speech and Concession Speech for November 4, 2008

Imagine you wake up from a bad dream, and you realise that the world is still bad, because Sarah Palin had won the election the day before and will be the Vice-President soon - one heartbeat away from the Presidency. Now we can accurately recreate what the evening of victory for Sarah Palin on November 4, 2008 would have looked like. The authors of the new book "Sarah from Alaska", Shushannah Walshe and Scott Conroy, got hold of the original victory speech (as well as the concession speech) which had been drafted for Sarah Palin for this election night. The Daily Beast thankfully made it available to us today - let the nightmare begin!

Victory speech:

"(...) It’s been just 68 days since that afternoon in Dayton, Ohio, when Senator McCain introduced me as his running mate. He is truly the maverick. He took a chance on me. I will always be grateful for that. It will be the honor of a lifetime to work him as vice president of the United States. And I pledge to govern with integrity, and goodwill, and clear conviction, and a servant’s heart.

(...)

It’s not always easy in politics to see the best in our opponents. But we have seen the grace and skill of Barack Obama, and the grit and determination of Joe Biden. By his nomination and extraordinary campaign, Barack Obama has achieved a great thing, for himself and for our country, and for that America will always honor him. I say God bless you, Senator Obama, and your beautiful family.

As for my own family, well, it’s been quite a journey these past 69 days. We were ready, in defeat, to return to a place and a life we love. And I said to my husband Todd that it’s not a step down when he’s no longer Alaska’s “First Dude.” He will now be the first guy ever to become the “Second Dude.”
Along the way in this campaign, it was Todd, as always, who helped with the children, gave me advice, and kept me strong. There are a lot of men in this world could learn a few things from Todd Palin, and I am so lucky that he is still my guy. And my luck began long before then, in having parents like Chuck and Sally Heath…and then blending into an accepting, loyal, fun, and diverse family.

Had it gone the other way tonight, we would not have returned in sorrow to the great State of Alaska. We would have carried with us memories that are forever, and joyful experiences that do not depend on victory.

(...)

I will remember all the people who said they were praying for me—you prayer warriors have been my strength and my shield. I will remember all the Blue Star Moms, and the special bond we share…all the veterans of war and former POW’s I had the honor of meeting. I will remember the working people of this country who put their faith in us…the folks who run our factories, grow our food, teach our children, and fight our wars… men and women like the construction worker and new American citizen who said at one of our rallies: “I was born in Columbia, but I was made in the USA.”

And for their example and their love, I will remember with gratitude all the families with special needs children. How could I ever forget the sight of a banner held up high to say “We Are Here For Trig”? How could I ever forget a boy like Charlie, a fine young man we met at a rally in Florida who has Down Syndrome? Charlie and I swapped email addresses, and the last time he replied he said, “By the way, please don’t call me ‘darlin’—it’s not tough enough.” So, tonight, a special shout-out to you, Chuck…darlin’. And let me repeat what I told you, because it applies to you and to all children and adults with special needs across America: You are beautiful, and I am so proud to know that my boy Trig will grow up to be just like you.

And I promise you: These next four years, families with special needs—and every family in America—can know that they have a friend and advocate in the White House.

In this campaign, we held to the belief that our country is still that “shining city on a hill” that Ronald Reagan spoke of so many years ago. And tonight, we have chosen a man ready and worthy to lead such a country.

(...)

In this campaign, I’ve had the rare enough privilege of praising a candidate whose story, character, and personal heroism require no embellishment. I said things about him—about how he has served and what he has overcome—that he could not say about himself, because he is that kind of man. He has faced long odds before, but he has never quit, never relented, and tonight America rewarded a lifetime of service, honor, and valor.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have the distinct privilege of being the first to introduce him as the President-elect of United States of America—John S. McCain."

That should be enough for now - read the full victory speech and the concession speech here at the Daily Beast.
