Palingates Weekly Roundup - January 17 to January 22, 2011

By Blueberry Tart

Palingates honored Martin Luther King Day with a post recalling his inspiring words, calling on Americans to stand up to evil and fight hate with love. The timing of his message resonates so strongly with the calls to renounce violent rhetoric in the wake of the Tucson tragedy. The violence that Dr. King saw first-hand and that eventually claimed his life could best be overcome by non-violent resistance – both parts, non-violence and resistance against injustice and evil, being equally important. Kathleen offers some wisdom about putting oneself in the others’ shoes and really trying to see their point of view, and also reminds us of the huge cost of violence, such as the history of Northern Ireland.

Patrick got us very excited with a post about his phone conversation with Kim Chatman, who has heard that there will be a big scandal relating to emails from Palin’s short tenure as Governor of Alaska. Kim, whose credentials include having filed the successful ethics complaint about Sarah’s slush fund, the Alaska Fund Trust, has heard from her sources that the emails contain damaging information on a variety of topics. Kim expects that damaging info on the Palin’s will be released “very soon,” although the exact timeline is not yet known. The comments were abuzz with speculation about which of Palin’s many skeletons will be the focus of this upcoming scandal. Best collective guess: more than one scandal will emerge.

We’ve had an influx of trolls lately, so Regina reminds us that we need not respond to their comments; in fact, please just ignore them. Much like the way that President Obama ignores Sarah Palin, this is the best way to handle trolls. Even the one pictured is really quite harmless, albeit not very pleasant to look at! One other request is to please be careful in labeling someone as a troll; sometimes this label may be WRONG, as happened, ironically, on this very same thread. In fact, if you follow Regina’s advice (please), the second problem will not BE a problem. No need to worry about defending Palingates; we are secure.

Get yourself settled with a bowl of popcorn and your favorite beverage, because it’s movie time! This post includes a great assortment of videos from the past week. We start with the fawning Sean Hannity and his softball questions, allowing Sarah to stick to her obvious script. Stewart and Colbert are priceless; do not miss! Dylan Ratigan points out the utter hypocrisy (up is down) of Sarah’s claim that it is her critics whose words are “reprehensible,” not her own words. Joan Hamsher says that it is a fair question to ask whether Palin acted responsibly in putting up the map and using the words she did, as violence was directed at Congressional offices right after HCR was passed. If I heard right, Joan Rivers called her a Nazi on Joy Behar’s program; Joan and her daughter have obviously been following Sarah’s antics and had some interesting comments. David Frum: “she’s madder than she is sad…it’s hard to imagine [her] coping as President with a tragedy like this.” David Corn called out her blood libel comment where she equated criticism of her with genocidal persecution; he also said, “She’s the last person…to be preaching a…Kumbaya approach to political discourse.”

Kathleen not only questions the idea that Sarah Palin is finished politically in the wake of the Tucson shootings, but she shows polling data indicating that Palin’s appeal remains largely unchanged, except for a small shift in some of her support from “very positive” to “somewhat positive.” The rest remains steady, at least in the NBC-WSJ poll cited. This does not mean that Sarah Palin stands a strong chance of being elected; her favorable:unfavorable ratio among the people at large, and among independents, remains very weak. But it does thrown some cold water on the notion that we can stop worrying about her as a political force.

Comments of the Week

Omomma: ". . . her rise to the top?" Top of what. Pinocchio Mountain? Who writes this crap.

AzureGhost and elizabeth44 were on the case late Sunday, investigating Friends for Palin 2012 (Sarah Palin, President) and its connections to people with what appear to be shady dealings in NV.

Nomadicjoe: So they are comparing her to both Ronald Reagan AND Martin Luther King!?! Sheeeesh, that's quite a stretch. I would have stuck with Evita Peron and left it there.

Later: I watched a documentary online the other day. "Five Steps to Tyranny" and it listed how a sane society can be lured into a fascist one. Step One, create a "US and THEM" and Step Two, dehumanize the opposing side.

CR46: Dr King's words and thoughts are and always will be meaningful, in today's society or in any future generation. The horrible racism and segregation that Dr King and many others fought against in the 60's was not an easy fight. We must ALL be willing to step up to the plate and let our voices be heard. I will not stand by and let evil overtake the great strides that have been made ( and a few more need to be made) in civil rights for everyone. As long as Teabaggers target politicians with violence, the woman's right to vote, child labor laws....we must stand and be heard.

MadamDeal: The Fairness Doctrine is the new "attack on freedom of speech." The day after Obama's Tucson remarks, Rush said "Civility is the new censorship."

There were many thoughtful comments about this and other tumultuous times in American history and Dr. King’s legacy.

Elizabeth44: …I firmly believe that love is light, and light overcomes the darkness… Those who have chosen evil will fight us every inch of the way, because it is their method of obtaining power. Those who are cooperating with evil out of fear, love and caring can help. Where do we start? Our families, friends, and neighbors.

Nin1963 implored God to spare us from Palin… other ‘Gaters joined in her prayer.

Juicy76 has a brilliant new nickname: Sarah "I have a scheme" Palin, that great civil rights leader.

Espresso4me: After all these years I still have a dream, Martin. One in which the fires of hate, violence, bigotry and ignorance are not stoked by those who have their own selfish personal and financial agendas. One where the voices of reason, peace, respect, and intelligence are strong, sound, and unfaltering...

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
Martin Luther King,

More_Cowbell: Could you ever have imagined that we'd be talking about Facebook and Twitter as being the main communication strategies of someone who thinks she's a viable candidate for President of the United States?

Nin1963: Carl Bernstein on Morning Joe said in response to Joe's question: "Should the media report every thing Palin says on her facebook as if it came from Mt Olympus" and Carl responded: "The media needs to treat her for what she is, a demagogue." Couldn't agree more. She has NO real solutions, only soundbites and quips and is a populist whore. She needs to be treated for what she is.

Later, Nin had a long list of traits of NPD and it sounded like Sarah’s biography.

Leota2: As I'm having a quiet morning---I just googled PALIN WHINES and giggled at the over half a million hits. . . . That's a lot of whining.

Later Leota said: …there is a serious problem with the Palin women's need to label any male who disagrees with them a pedophile. That is some serious Freudian baggage those sick puppies are dragging around.

Tan: …this was the perfect opportunity to [reach out to those outside her base] in a sympathetic manner. She could’ve expressed her innocence whilst also admitting regret in her poor choice of words and symbolism and followed up with a pledge to unite. She also should've apologised for the choice of 'blood libel'… But her mental illness is just too strong and compels her to - an explosion of rage and spite and hate. Sickening!

Live blogging Sarah’s Hannitizing ritual with 59 people on chat was apparently a blast!

BanditBasheert: difficult [week] for all of us but obviously no one has suffered more than Sister Sarah. She is the "biggest victim" of them all. She got caught being exactly "WHO" and "WHAT" she is.

Patrick’s post on Tuesday opened the floodgates for VERY excited comments by ‘Gaters dreaming about what fate our Sarah might endure… the most enthusiastic seemed to involve an orange jumpsuit.

Casey’s Mom: Breaking news: Wasilla Wal-Mart announces an unexpected shortage of canned goods. Details at eleven. ;o)

Wayofpeace: Who so diggeth a pit shall fall therein. –Proverbs

ProChoiceGrandma had a good list: Oh, so many choices….
How about the mysterious 15 oil & gas explorers who received $193million?
The Pipeline always seems to involve bribery.
Dairygate is another big one with criminal consequences.
Housegate would also involve bribery/favors/theft.
But please let the emails at least show how she lied about Trig’s birth! Insurance fraud.

Femme7 calmed us down: I'll get excited AFTER the damaging emails are released.....IF they are released. I just have seen this impending "iceberg" story too many times to get too worked up. Sorry I'm a party-pooper but I remember after Palin quit and the big iceberg stories were running wild and nothing ever came of them… But…I do think that once there is a crack in the dam, I think Alaskans will come out of the woodwork to tell their Sarah and Todd stories.

Ltl1: She is the real victim here! Ignore all those dead and wounded people over there in Tucson! Look at poor, poor Sarah and the threats she must deal with!

Juicyfruityy found this Hubert Humphrey quote, which seems apropos: "You cannot go around and keep score. If you keep score on the good things and the bad things, you'll find out that you're a very miserable person. God gave man the ability to forget, which is one of the greatest attributes you have. Because if you remember everything that's happened to you, you generally remember that which is the most unfortunate."

Peacepax: I found a quote on that web site which made me think of palingates. “Fear not the path of truth for the lack of people walking on it.” - Robert F. Kennedy

Drpatois: Regina, did you find those trolls under the bridge to nowhere?

Alembic had a good summary of all the reasons why Independents will never vote for Sarah.

Monkey99 had several excellent comments; here is part of one: …I have gone to Pro-Palin blogs, and can't believe the level of childish thinking and use of offensive language. The level of fear (mostly hidden by bravado) and mistrust of pretty much everything is a far cry from what I am used to. The field of combat is not something you can exactly argue with, but if any of these Palin supporters were to be thrust into it, I'm not sure I could trust them with a weapon. I commend you all for making Palingates a class act!

Lilylake was hopeful: I think this is the "tipping point" for Sarah Palin. We have witnessed it. Things are downhill for her now; no one in their right mind wants to listen to her nonsense, much less support Sarah Palin for national office.

There was a mini-thread on why Sarah won’t sue the NE – because what they have printed is true and also a suit would expose her to depositions and other discovery. I just want to make sure this comment by Patrick is not lost (referring to NE report on an affair that Sarah had with Todd’s then-partner): The Brad Hanson story is true, confirmed to us from several very good sources, including a member of Brad Hanson's family.

Mmboucher had us ROFL with a quote from C4P “refudiating” the NE article, including this gem: “Given what we know about the Palin family, and their transparency in how they conduct themselves, this story is ludicrous on it’s [sic] face.” OMG, they are SO delusional!

Lilybart: Two nights ago I was at a NYC media party talking with a Vanity Fair reporter about Palingates etc...he was very interested in babygate. I enticed him with the things that most reporters would find odd....that the McCain campaign asked for proof of Trig's parentage and she refused. Why would anyone who is chosen from obscurity to be the VP nominee not provide everything asked of them? And the ADN reporter Lisa Demer who tried to put the rumors to rest, and again, she would not cooperate. He kept asking questions.....he also said that VF has too many stories in the can, backed up, so I don't hope this will be a story, but I am sure they will talk....

KatieAnnieOakley: When people spoke out about G.W. Bush, they were traitors; when people speak out about Obama, they're Patriots.

Nomoosestew: She is the real victim here!! People were shot, killed, and now Gabby is fighting to get well but people weren't nice to Sarah. Have you no heart?

Alex posted this quote from Mark Shields on PBS: "This is America, where a white Catholic male Republican judge was murdered on his way to greet a Democratic Jewish woman member of Congress, who was his friend. Her life was saved initially by a 20-year old Mexican-American gay college student, and eventually by a Korean-American combat surgeon, all eulogized by our African American President."

AKRNC had another great comment with insider info on Friday afternoon; here is a snippet: It seems that due to her refusal to communicate with these people who are ready to invest millions in her, they now have cold feet and are looking elsewhere. They had been told many times prior to this that Palin did not take direction from anyone but they had thought with their investment in her, she would listen to them. She has them running scared because they realize now how uncontrollable she is.

Wesinoregon: I think I officially have "Palin Fatigue". (that should be a new medical term)

Indy_girl: Well, Sarah *is* as important as Jesus, Mohammed, the Easter Bunny, Father Christmas, St. Patrick, Buddha, Allah, and the great Pumpkin....all rolled into one narcissistic package, dontcha know! *wink*

Maelewis and others provided info on the fact that Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose the income his wife received from the Heritage Foundation. This, along with Thomas’ and Scalia’s failure to recuse themselves from the Citizens United decision, points to the direct connections between right-wing power brokers and the SCOTUS, and the apparent conflicts of interest of these justices.

Emily Peacock, responding to Ripley in CT: Exactly. It's the emails. They've fought tooth and nail over releasing them using every legal trick in the book. They MUST be very incriminating.

Kilob was inspired, dubbing Sarah the “self appointed Demander in Chief” – excellent!
Palingaters send our love to Mr & Mrs Gunka.

The Last Word

Toccaro had a powerful comment on Palin’s attempt to co-opt Dr. King, including: This woman knows nothing about the real legacy of King and those like me who were there and experienced that awful time in history…We are of all persuasions, political leanings, cultures, countries, colors and more, but the common thread, I believe, is that we believe in the good of mankind and that good will triumph evil. Like King did. We dream of a better tomorrow.

Palingates Weekly Roundup - January 10 to January 15, 2011

By Blueberry Tart

Thanks to Regina for the excellent video that she posted as an update to last Saturday’s post and for Patrick’s updates. These included quoting PalinTV tweeting, “Sarah Palin WILL NOT sit down and shut up. She won’t retreat, she’ll reload…” Also, the Christian Science Monitor reported a possible link of Loughner to American Renaissance, a right-wing group, and we were reminded of more overtly violent rhetoric from the Tea Party.

We are all so grateful to Leadfoot_LA and Bella, who were determined to finish what they started. Despite their own heavy hearts, they offered us another fine report on SPAK. Sarah doesn’t want to feed a banana to a caribou so she makes Willow do it; they see seals while kayaking and Sarah comments about her seal purse; they compete to find gold; Piper says Sarah is crazy (truest words spoken on SPAK); Sarah calls her Piper Diaper again; Sarah tries to make muskox into a political metaphor; Sarah enjoys a Blue Angels airshow so much that she can “die and go to heaven now”, another insensitive comment since 4 people died in a crash while practicing for the show. Leadfoot doesn’t think heaven is where Sarah is headed. The post includes Leota2’s perceptive comment about Sarah’s “prop stalker,” an excellent video on right-wing’s violent rhetoric (such as “If ballots don’t work, bullets will”) posted by Nicole Sandler and Sarah Jones’ strong post (“Christina Taylor Green is dead and the Palin camp has somehow managed to make Sarah Palin the victim, yet again.”). Later, wayofpeace and others linked to HuffPo’s video-medley of SPAK; you get a prize if you know how many times Sarah says “awesome.”

Joe Christmas offers a very interesting comment on how humans are wired to make associations, and how this inborn trait leaves people susceptible to propaganda. In this case, Palin and her allies are desperately trying to undo the association of Palin’s violent imagery and rhetoric with the Tucson murders and assassination attempt. “A terroristic act transpired under a bullseye that Sarah Palin endorsed. She is bonded to that image for all time.” Adding to the intrigue is RAM’s clumsy abject lie, which all but the most infatuated Palinbots know is CYA BS. Disqusux documented the Palinbot’s response, and Patrick had this to say: “Sarah Palin has a lot to answer for. However, she won't…She is angry. She is angry that it's her who is being called out...She is not a leader. She is a small and angry and thoughtless person…

Next, Kathleen analyzed Palin’s self-centered denial of any responsibility for the Tucson massacre – actually, not only a denial of her own responsibility but an attempt to blame others for associating her with Tucson – they are the ones who are irresponsible, not she. How unamerican it is to insinuate otherwise! She labels these associations of violence with right-wing rhetoric as a “manufactured blood libel,” proving that her insensitivity is an equal match for her disingenuity. (Perhaps next week she’ll go the next step into the Twilight Zone and blame Congresswoman Giffords for the tragedy.) Sarah and her handlers stage her speech to try to make her look Presidential, and she has the hubris to suggest that President Obama should join her (OMG!) in endorsing these sentiments. (Her narcissism/I am the center of the universe/allow me to bestow my wisdom on you mere mortals is in overdrive here.) As usual, her facial expressions and head movements tell the truth and belie her words (especially telling is the pugnacious mouth). As many readers pointed out, it is revealing of Palin’s true character that she had to make this day about her, rather than allowing those killed and wounded to be honored without having this solemn day tainted by Palin’s self-serving spin. No, this day is about Sarah Palin, as all days are.

I’m going to repeat what many ‘Gaters have pointed out – you don’t call something “a bullseye icon” if it is a surveyor’s symbol. You don’t call people to take up arms and then claim you mean they should vote. You don’t deliberately double down on your violent rhetoric and then claim innocence of the implications. You don’t claim you didn’t know there could be consequences when the actual victim pointed the consequences out 9 months ago. Stop taking people for fools; no one except the lunatic fringe is stupid enough to believe Sarah’s BS.

I also want to highlight here something that came up in the comments: "In the US, blood libel is included in the dogma of neo-Nazi groups like the Aryan Nation and White Aryan Resistance. To anyone who espouses anti-Semitic ideology, it’s a familiar term—a dog-whistle, of sorts—especially as it’s used here to describe the media, which anti-Semites believe is Jewish-controlled." (H/T to Sqrtneg1 and others.)

Patrick’s excellent post invites Palingaters to think deeply about how the polarization of American politics must be overcome if we are to reckon with the problems of this country and world. He asks this question and invites us to try to answer it: “But where is this supposed to end? How should members of a society co-exist in peace if large parts of the population hate each other?” He reminds us that Germany learned a terrible lesson by allowing extremists to control the country and eliminate the middle ground where problems can actually be solved. The post highlights the hate-fueled messengers of the right and Cenk Uygur’s powerful response to the nonsense about violent rhetoric “equivalence.” This post also features two letters from readers. The first is from a psychologist who wrote that violent rhetoric can fill a void and resonate within a deranged mind, spurring action; this would seem to debunk Sarah’s denial of any possible connection between her violent metaphors and imagery and the tragedy last week. Another reader who encouraged us at Palingates to look inward to express ourselves just as passionately, but perhaps more respectfully. The comments included a range of views, some forceful but respectful disagreement, and showed that many ‘Gaters gave a lot of thought to these questions.

Patrick’s intriguing post explores the roots of political anxiety in the U.S. In a nutshell, “it’s the economy, stupid!” He reviews a German bank’s study of economic trends, here focusing on what is happening in the U.S. In the big picture, some economic indicators are stabilizing, but the unemployment rate continues to threaten our recovery and thus presents fertile ground for political upheaval. Unemployment is both the result and (now) a cause of economic stagnation. Not only is the unemployment rate stuck above 9%, but the long-term unemployment rate is almost double that of any prior recession since 1950; this sets the stage for discontent and potential political exploitation of the situation. Another graph shows that high unemployment dampens wage increases. The huge amount of commercial mortgate debt about to come due appears to be another ticking time bomb for the economy.

Patrick points out that President Obama did not create these problems; he inherited them and has made progress in stabilizing the economy. However, progress is slow; many people are impatient, and some are desperate, to see more progress. Solutions are urgently needed, but further large-scale government spending is not likely amidst the political gridlock that often dominates Washington. This “continues to open the path for political pied pipers” like Sarah Palin, who, regardless of having no solutions whatsoever, could tap into the country’s fears and discontent. There were many excellent comments on the economy; Palingaters are one smart bunch!

Comments of the Week

Palingates provided an important and welcoming forum for so many of us who needed someplace to go where we could express our pain, sadness, confusion and anger about the Tucson tragedy. There were so many excellent comments that I could not do justice to them all, but I still went a little overboard. Here are some that I gleaned before I had to stop...

Anja: 6 people have died & the neocons are out defending Palin?!?!?!? For once can't they STFU & honor the wounded & dead.

CR46: While I wish no harm to Sarah Palin, I want her to be held accountable for her own actions…How do I explain these actions to my 7 and 8 yr old grandsons? How do I explain to our guests that we are sponsoring? How can I, myself, even grasp the reality that the media is as culpable as Sarah Palin in fostering these messages of hate and violence as the "norm"?

BanditBasheert: Sarah Palin is threatening to reload TODAY after what happened in TUCSON????

Austintxx/Kathleen posted this comment which was NOT SCRUBBED from Palin’s Facebook page: A commenter posted the following at 18:12: "It's ok. Christina Taylor Green was probably going to end up a left wing bleeding heart liberal anyway. Hey, as 'they' say, what would you do if you had the chance to kill Hitler as a kid? Exactly."

anonPoster: Title: ANATOMY OF AN ABORTIVE POLITICAL CAREER (condensed version):
Chapter 1: "He's pallin' around with terrorists" -- followed by an ignominious election loss.
Chapter 2: "Drill, Baby, Drill" -- followed by a disastrous oil spill in the Gulf.
Chapter 3: "Don't Retreat. RELOAD" -- followed by a tragic massacre in Tucson, Arizona.
The End.

Silver_desert: Sarah brags constantly about her tough skin but she's cowering and hiding while she waits for others to bail her out of this mess.

HighPeaks had an amazing long comment on guns, on the Roundup thread. Worth reading.
Headset: In RAM's attempt to distance themselves from the "bullseye graphic," she stated that "the graphic wasn't even designed in-house. It came from out outside firm." What BS. In my professional career, any time that I have outsourced production for anything, I'm remain responsible for the output. RAM and the rest of Mrs. Todd Palin's team are PITIFUL. [BBT: obviously RAM/Sarah gave the graphic designer instructions about what they wanted, and it is also obvious from Sarah’s later comments that the imagery was deliberately intended to be a gun’s crosshairs, NOT a surveyor’s symbol, RAM, you despicable lying coward. You owned it then, and you own it now. No thinking person is fooled by your CYA BS.]

ApparentReality: Now, millions of people who did not think about Palin in the past now know about her bullseye map and the fact that she set crosshairs on Ms. Giffords. That is an undeniable fact. The public at large have now seen with their own eyes what a totally irresponsible person Sarah Heath Palin is. Some who thought she was just silly or harmless will have now changed their tune about her. Millions now see that she is totally unfit to be in the political arena of this country.

AzureGhost: Thank you Joe Christmas and Patrick for this latest post, and to everyone who has contributed to Palingates over the last few days, whether as a poster or as a commenter. Sometimes it feels as if the world has gone completely crazy, and in those moments it's such a relief to have an oasis of sanity and reason.

CR46: As all Gator's and frequent readers of Palingates know, I am an avid hunter and own many weapons. From this day forward I WILL fight to ban semi-automatic and automatic weapons… I vow that I will write, email each and every congressperson and senator regularly until we ban the sale of such weapons.

Leadfoot_LA: I can't believe that anyone, A N Y O N E with a heart, brain, or soul, could defend that map and what Sarah did. Has humanity really sunk that low?

Louiecypher: It's not just the "crosshairs", Sarah it's more than that. It's having people yelling "Kill Him!" at your rallies and doing nothing but smile. Scaring old people with lies, veiled accusations of being a terrorist or secret Muslim. Having no compassion for other religions except you own…

JCos: For people keeping a scorecard, Palin has broken Commandments 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. [BBT: is that just this week?] I could add 5 as well, but I think the others are enough to confirm her place in Hell…I think she's going for the career slam in Commandment breaking. She may as well go for the Grand Slam - breaking all ten in the same calendar year.

ProChoiceGrandma: I would like to see some examples of how school districts would handle threatening graphics such as Sarah's. In most cases, I believe expulsion, or at the very least, suspension. Can we request that Sarah be expelled from politics??

Cheeriogirl found this quote from Sharron Angle: "Ms. Angle elaborated on her defense of inflammatory language stating: "Without inflammatory language I got nothing to say!" said Ms Angle, "In fact we on the right need this hyperbole and distortion to keep the American people confused, imagine how they'd react when they learn that all the problems in America are because the corporations pay us to do their bidding."

‘Gaters noticed that Sarah’s fake folksy accent was gone, and sick of Sarah said: Appears Sarah was given a big stocking full of "g's" for Christmas. She did not drop any during the entire video.

Cackling Rad: …her use of a provocative term has served its purpose and predictably provoked ongoing discussion; instead of talking about the shooting everyone is now talking about Sarah.

BanditBasheert: We all know that she DELIBERATELY did three things here:
- She tried to grab the spotlight from the President's address because she is a narcissistic freakshow who can't stand that the African American man beat her ass in the election.
- She ratcheted up the rhetoric while saying she was NOT ratcheting up the rhetoric and dog whistled her followers that they should "keep up the good fight" and in fact, go after the Jews now.
- She proved to everyone with a working brain that she is incompetent to not only hold public office, but to be breathing our air. She proved she has no sympathy, no humanity, and no intellect.

Ibwilliamsi: Why is no one looking at Tort law and more particularly at Vicarious Liability? It worked on the Metzgers.

Femme8: On a day of mourning, Palin decided to ramp up the rhetoric rather than tone it down.
THAT, tells America all they need to know about this woman. She basically states that it's the media's rhetoric that is to blame and they should be held accountable. But, her hate rhetoric.....well, that's just fine and she should not be held accountable.

maelewis: Where did anyone get the idea that Palin would apologize for anything or admit to a poor choice of words? …Being Sarah Palin means never having to say you're sorry.

BluedogAK: …Mrs. Palin has never seen a situation that she cannot make worse through her own narcissism and idiocy. She has done the unbelievable: Made this whole situation worse for herself.

Curiouser11: Orwell.

Mel coined a brilliant new moniker: The Mansourian Candidate.

sickofSarah: All Alaskans that know facts about babygate, housegate, dairygate or any gate that will destroy Sarah's political career... now is the time to come forward. It is time to end Sarah's reign of terror.

Here is part of a good comment from AnonPoster: You can't make the argument that rhetoric CAN'T incite violence when you're talking about YOUR words, but claim that journalists' rhetoric CAN incite violence -- ALL in the same speech…3) You can't morally claim a "blood libel" with respect to yourself without considering that placing crosshairs over Democratic candidates was a parallel analogy for killing them just because of who THEY are. (Not to mention the incomprehensible insensitivity in using this analogy when the Congresswoman with a bullet hole in her head is Jewish.)

Linda1961: Nice going $arah, not only have your supporters firmly connected you with the Tucson Tragedy and with crosshairs, but you have done so as well. But you had to do them one better and connect yourself with the term "blood libel". Do you feel better after your pity party? Or are you still in the midst of it?

Kathi in NJ: …that video was an attempt to seem presidential and was entitled "America's Enduring Strength". It will now forever be known as "The Blood Libel Speech"…

Heidi3’s Republican husband’s reaction to Sarah’s speech made my day (and it’s only 8:30 a.m.): Palin got to the point of saying, "President Obama and I may not always see eye to eye" (or something like that), and my husband freaked out. He yelled at the screen, "You fucking bitch!!". He snapped off the computer, and came stalking out to where I was sitting. He was livid! He said, "How dare she put herself on the same plane as our President?" Whoa...We both agreed that it was the most insincere piece of contrived, self-serving garbage ever purported to be a "speech". He also said, "uneducated Wasilla housewives who don't take care of their 5 children don't 'give speeches'". He is very impressed with President Obama. This is a watershed in our household!

Laprofesora: …Robert Draper…who wrote the piece on her for the New York Times Magazine…said he had been in touch with the Paylin people...He said she couldn't handle a face-to-face interview, even with Fox. She is way too unhinged to be on the national stage. She's not even in office and she can't do an interview. He also implied the video was all RAM.

Austintxx: I liken my America to a large table. One that welcomes EVERYONE to sit and break bread and imbibe. No matter your race, religion, age, sexual preference. We sit and laugh and talk and counsel and help each other any way we can to the best of our collective abilities. As with most families, it can get tough. But, with an open mind, we work it out. Any one is welcome, as long as they mind their manners and are receptive to different ideas and are in turn listened to. Children are the most important at the table…

ProChoiceGrandma: Quite frankly, I believe we are doing just fine they way we are. Patrick, Kathleen, Regina, Blueberry Tart and all the guest posters have authored the most magnificent posts, and we comment our opinions. On occasions when Sarah has done something outrageous (like every time she opens her mouth), we are incensed at her audacity and furious at the media coverage, or lack thereof… The difference we have at Palingates is that we don't wish physical harm to come to Sarah, we want her to be exposed for her lies and hopefully face jail time for her criminal activities... Rather than using gun imagery like the right-wing nutjobs, our "weapon" of choice is humorous ridicule. Narcissists hate ridicule…it is much more debilitating to an egomaniac like Sarah… In short, I am not going to STFU.

Brian: …the media once again gave her a platform for what was obviously a planned preemption of the president's speech, an act of profound disrespect for the office and especially the people hurt by the tragedy in Arizona…Palin as this alien political being riding a wave of inchoate discontent… She sees herself as a messiah, the ultimate victim. She isn't merely maligned, she is blood libeled…People with messiah complexes don't typically fade away peacefully…With her blood libel speech she shows a willingness to up the ante, to wantonly sow the seeds of anger and chaos…

Regina: Words matter.

SirGuestalot:

I am disgusted by any individual discussing Native American rituals and individuals in such a derogatory way Kilmeade did. Has he never seen a four-direction blessing before? It's outrageous that Kilmeade derided native rituals in such a public way. The invocation/blessing was extraordinary!

Wait, I'll tone it down.
It is severely disappointing that Kilmeade is so culturally, intellectually and socially deprived--and sits in front of a camera/microphone spewing ignorance.

Wait.
It is too bad that Kilmeade is so xeonophobic that he finds native traditions strange, especially since native peoples were HERE IN AMERICA FIRST - FIRST NATIONS...

Wait...

SCmommy: I think the thing that I have objected to first, and loudest, and most vehemently, because of the seriousness with which I've always taken my vocation as an at-home mom--is the FRAUDULENT motherhood persona she tries to pull off. Because, if you are a parent, that is who you are at your core, first and foremost… And I have NEVER trusted those who don't make that shift as a person once there is a child in the picture… I'm talking about a SHIFT in your CORE in what you find as the highest priority in your life. It was BLATANTLY obvious to me from the first time I heard her speak that the children were not the priority--SHE was. And I knew immediately she was not to be trusted. And she never should be.

Forgotmyname: [Ron Reagan Jr] decided to clear something up. He said (not exact) "my father had nothing whatsoever in common with Sarah Palin. Nothing. Zip. ZERO." Quite emphatic.

Maelewis (on new RNC chair): The good news about him is that he thinks that the RNC is part of the Tea Party. This guy is so far to the right that I think he is the one tipping the earth and screwing up the zodiac.

Overit!: As far as Sarah not knowing what "blood libel" meant, Micmac said it best,"(She) Most likely (thought it was) a surveyor's term."

Madam Deal: Breaking News: US bridges are safe to travel on; all trolls are engaged in internet "heated debates."

Wayofpeace reminded us of Dickens’ brilliant words:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us, we had nothing before us...

The Last Word

President Obama: I want us to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it. All of us - we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children's expectations. If there are rain puddles in heaven, Christina is jumping in them today. And here on Earth, we place our hands over our hearts, and commit ourselves as Americans to forging a country that is forever worthy of her gentle, happy spirit.

Kim told us that the scandal will be HUGE - that "all hell is gonna break loose."

It's possible that the emails will be released soon.

We don't know more at this point, but we will all keep our eyes wide open. ;-)

Palingates Weekly Roundup - January 3 to January 9, 2011

By Blueberry Tart

A nobody named Tammy Bruce tweeted something about “homos” that Sarah Palin retweeted, possibly in error. Tammy, who is a lesbian, apparently thinks gives her license to use homophobic slurs. Her message, though, is that the more someone complains about gays, the more likely it is that they are hiding their own closet sexual preferences. Sarah’s retweet suggests that she supports this, but her position on gays is a bit more obscure than on some other social issues. We know that she didn’t support the repeal of DADT, so chances are that she didn’t even understand what she was retweeting. I mean, honestly, Sarah, do you really think you should be pointing out how people hide their secrets behind a barrage of bravado? This mini-tweet-gate reminded us of Sarah’s earlier, blazing tweets admonishing Democrats whenever they say anything she can criticize (eg Rahm Emmanuel vs. Rush Limbaugh and “retarded”). We’re happy to report that Sarah has won a new award, The Most Annoying Person of 2010 – well deserved!

Kathleen’s excellent post features Nick Jans, a true Alaskan outdoorsman who can tell a “poseur” when he sees one. He scathingly takes down Palin, who, he says, “represents the antithesis of the Alaska I love.” He wrote something back in 2008 that we all can see is true today, thanks to Palin herself: “Set her down in the bush on her own and I bet we'd discover she's about as adept at butchering a moose and building a fire at 40 below zero as she is at discussing Supreme Court decisions. And that mountain-woman act is only the tip of a hollow iceberg.” He recognizes that the new media dynamic that allows people like Palin to create their own narrative of who they are, without any accountability, means that “Americans are essentially casting votes for fictional characters.” Kathleen points out that she is an opportunist who exploits the confusion of those subjected to mass media manipulation. With her TV show, she “further muddied the waters between what is real and what is fabrication or mere embroidery.”

I will start by saying that I am very, very upset and emotional even as I am writing this. This was a terrible day for America, with the murderous rampage that took place in Tucson, killing six people and critically wounding at least six others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. We do not know the motivation of the apparently deranged young man who shot 20 people, killing a 9 year old girl, a federal judge, a congressional staffer, a pastor and several others. But we do know that Sarah Palin helped to sow the seeds of this violence, and has their blood on her hands. It’s especially ironic that Palin chose Facebook to offer her “condolences,” when it was her Facebook post that literally put Congresswoman Giffords in the crosshairs in the first place.

And here’s a special message from me to RAM: that means you, too, Rebecca Mansour; you proved tonight that you, like Sarah, are a despicable coward and a failure as a human being. You and Sarah are complicit in inciting this violence and morally responsible for these deaths and injuries. Are you sure your job is worth selling your soul, RAM? Have you brainwashed yourself so anything goes, even the deaths of a child and other innocent people, in the service of your master and the almighty dollar? As sunnyjane reminded us, there is a special place in hell for those responsible for the death of a child.

Let me also say to those in the media whose job it is to provide honest information to the public about would-be public officials – you are partly to blame for the fact that Sarah Palin has a platform. You have helped make her what she is. You know the truth about her. That goes for you, ADN, and you, NYT, and you, WaPo, and many others. Can you look yourself in the mirror today? Keith Olbermann’s special comment is one of his most important.

Thanks to Regina and Patrick for responding so quickly, providing the forum for all of us that we very much need, and for posting the MSNBC interview with Giffords, in which she specifically mentioned being targeted by Palin, and how politicians (and others) at all points in the political spectrum have to speak out against violence. Congresswoman Giffords: “Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there are consequences to that action.”

Comments of the Week

Buffalogal: …she sees a tweet that not only uses a word that makes many reasonable people bristle but a tweet that also accuses detractors of the DADT repeal as being closeted gays - and she decides that THIS is the statement she wants to make to the world? Dear bots - Your queen is insane. I know, it's sad. I'm afraid it's time to find someplace safe and warm for her now, where she can live out her days.

Tan had an interesting long comment stemming from the recent disclosure that the caribou killed on SPAK was not gutted; here is a small part: Posing with the dead creature, gloatingly. Keeping gloating trophies of kills of wild animals with huge advantages for the human. Her attitude to the whole debacle. The blatant waste. Everything. Everything just screams a total lack of respect for living creatures.

Psalm023: Great recap - I think for those who visit the first time on Palingates, reading these well-researched accounts of all things Palin is turning the tide for SP. The integrity of the articles and the way they are presented speaks for those who are fed up and want honest reporting. I believe that the disillussioned readers of all brands are coming here for relief, hearing common sense mature presentation of the facts.

Maelewis: Sarah will only make a trip to a foreign country when the photo op has been arranged. What's the point of going somewhere if there isn't any publicity for Sarah. Also: Despite some Republicans commenting about Sarah's lack of qualifications to run for president, the Republicans still need her. She is good at raising money, energizing a crowd, and she will serve as an attack dog, saying the things that responsible, mature candidates can't say.

Jack Slater predicted her energy price tweet and then said: Same old mantra: KEEP FEAR ALIVE

Ginger50: I have never seen anyone make so much money speaking at charity events like the Palins. Most speakers donate their time and pay for their own expenses to advocate for the charity they are speaking for.

Cheeriogirl passed this along from HuffPo (part of longer post with more details):

Reagan increased our debt an average of 23% yearly...h e TRIPLED it from 934B to 2.6T (186%)
Bush increased our debt an average of 11% yearly...h e DOUBLED it from 5.7 to 10.6T (86%)
Obama increased our debt 10% in his first year from 10.6 to 12.3 trillion (to stop a great depression )

HighPeaks: If only the "radioactive" Ms. Palin had a half-life approaching that of Radium 216 (182 nanoseconds). As it is, I doubt if even sending her to Yucca Mountain would be enough to protect the rest of us from her toxic emissions. Later: When I look back at our founding fathers, it seems clear their original intent was to have a spirited, lively, intelligent, thoughtful discussion of issues, followed by compromise, and coming together in unity of purpose. I see nothing remotely resembling this original intent from 90 percent of the modern Republican party.

Sunnyjane reminded us of this gem from Sarah, the “energy expert”: Oil (of coal), of course, is a fungible commodity and they don’t flag, ya know, the molecules where, where it’s going to where it’s not but and in the, in the sense of the Congress today they know our very, very hungry domestic markets that need that oil first. So I believe that what Congress is going to do also is not to allow the export bans to such a degree that it’s Americans who get stuck holding the bag without the energy source that is produced here, pumped here, it’s gotta flow into our domestic markets first.

Aview999: Oh and SARAH? You WILL BE exposed. Maybe not today, tomorrow, this month or this year...but it WILL happen either ON or BEFORE you declare your candidacy. It will be A DAY OF CELEBRATION FOR PALINGATERS...as we've been WATCHING YOU SINCE THE BIG LIE. You will be EXPOSED for perpetrating THE BIG HOAX on the American public...and believe me, you'll be facing some PISSED OFF BOTS AND AMERICAN VOTERS.
You're going down girl...come hell or high water. :) :) :)

Myrtille2: Concerning Bruce's tweet I think she retweeted it by mistake but it would be worse for her to acknowledge that. It shows once more that she has to be kept away from buttons, especially the red one...

Jack Slater: Hi, my name is Bristol Palin. Thank you for having me here this evening to speak with you about abstinence. Now, don't do like I did and get knocked up. Stay pure cuz I said so. If people make fun of you, then tell all those bitch fag homos to STFU and give 'em the middle finger. Praise the Lord and God bless you. Thank you, for the $15,000 check.

The comments were ablaze with reports that Todd was linked to a massage parlor-prostitution sting. Another rumor is about an “embezzlement - misuse of money indictment.” Both unverified. But this is known: the massage therapist, Shailey Tripp (interesting name) pled no contest and was convicted in June on a charge of “Maintaining Place of Prostitution.”

Grasshopper: The thing I just can't get over is the fact that as embarrassing as her show is, why in gods name would she ever allow so many of these scenes to remain in the final edit. (the out takes must be hilarious)… So much of this show puts her in an obviously poor light. Why would she let these screw ups be seen by millions. Does she really believe they make her look good? If so, she's crazier than I thought.

Sunnyjane imagined what Mark Burnett might have said about a second season of SPAK: "If you sign Palin up for a second season, get yourself another man to work with her. She is stupid, her children are brats, and Todd has the personality of a melted Popsicle. I'm not doing it."

HighPeaks had a long, excellent comment; here is part: Nick Jans and Kathleen have together articulated one of the most thoughtful indictments of both Sarah Palin and the shallow state of the American political process I have ever read. Palin’s image is nothing more than that--an image cobbled together from an assortment of mindless, poorly-reasoned, shoot-from-the-hip talking points filtered, distilled, and honed through conservative focus-group testing… In SPAK, the magnificent Alaskan wilderness is just a prop… She openly mocks ideals of conservation or environmental protection while seeming to look upon the entire state as nothing more than her personal playground... Unfortunately, Ms. Palin is simply a reflection of some of the larger system’s workings in microcosm…

CaliGirl22 reposted the Manic Pixie Dream Girl message that Sarah retweeted; that is REALLY strange.

Leota2: …when someone who has a media following, was a governor of a state and really saw that this country is on the verge of right wing insanity puts democrats names under targets, EVERYONE should be asking themselves if that person should be a part of the national discourse— ever again.

Louiecypher: Scrub, Scrub, Scrub Sarah, fb, twitter, Op-Ed, still not gonna come off your hands, Oh how oh how to get that blood off of your hands?

AnonPoster: I've been a voter for four decades, and I've never seen the kind of immature, irresponsible rhetoric coming from a prominent politician during such unstable times in our country as what has been spewing from Palin's mouth. Remember the NYC Muslim Center controversy which Palin whipped up with her tweets and FB post? It took prominent generals in the military speaking against that type of rhetoric to get her to shut up because of the death threats to our soldiers on foreign soil!
WHEN ARE THE MEDIA GOING TO START DOING THEIR JOBS ON THIS VILE, IGNORANT WOMAN?!?!

Molly_WI: Jan Brewer, you could never have imagined this happening? Really? And it makes Arizona look bad? Ya THINK???

Lilly-lily: Well, the Rubicon has been crossed. We all knew something like this was inevitable given the hateful rhetoric that the vileness that Palin has been spouting for two years.

Inmylife: On the bottom of the screen it said sheriff said something like "Arizona has become a mecca for hatred and bigotry" (not sure about exact words) - no wonder the Palins want to move there!

Kevin Shinn quoted Teddy Roosevelt: "…it is a very natural thing that weak and vicious minds should be inflamed to acts of violence by the kind of awful mendacity and abuse that have been heaped upon me… they cannot, month in month out and year in and year out, make the kind of untruthful, of bitter assault that they have made and not expect that ...brutal and violent characters, especially when the brutality is accompanied by a not very strong mind; they cannot expect that such natures will be unaffected by it [...]"

As if Palin’s actions aren’t despicable enough, she had RAM lie about the crosshair symbol being a surveyor’s symbol. Lidia17, Patrick and others reminded us of Sarah’s earlier tweet, which proves that she absolutely meant it as a symbol of guns: “SarahPalinUSA: Remember months ago "bullseye" icon used 2 target the 20 Obamacare-lovin' incumbent seats? We won 18 out of 20 (90% success rate;T'aint bad)” BBT: honestly, sarah, i didn’t think you could sink any lower; you are a pitiful coward! RAM, you are a soulless mercenary; you can’t even own up to your own handiwork. You BOTH have blood on your hands.

Myrtilla: We will make no progress unless we face ugly truths about what has lead up to these murders. In order to have peace and healing, we must be honest about the actions, the climate, the rhetoric that surrounds us. We may never know exactly what motivated the shooter, but we do know that the words and actions which glorify violence must end.

Laprofesora: …Scarah Paylin quit her elected position because "frivolous" ethics complaints made her job too hard. And here we have Congresswoman Gifford receiving death threats, having her office vandalized and having the courage to face threats and continue to do her job to represent her constituents. THIS is what a "servant's heart" looks like, Scarah, you weasly piece of shit. If you had a shred of decency you would crawl under your bed and stay there until you are old and gray.

Leota2 (from a long comment): So to Mrs. Palin tapping out hate and bile on social networking sites, radio and FOX interviews in her homemade chattering studio; to radio personalities who vent bigotry and hate for money and listeners, to the overpaid talking television heads who flog lies and dress them as the truth hinting at conspiracies and danger because a black man is President, to the MSM who ignored what has been happening because that would have meant they had to stretch a brain cell or maybe get kicked in the ass by their corporate bosses, to all who did not vote because they don't feel it would have made any difference ----it is indeed, all of your faults.

Crystalwolfakacaligrl: …I am very certain the MSM or LSM can't give paylin a pass on this! But it took people to die for them to see how dangerous she is.

JCos: What's that on the palm of your hands, Palin? Those aren't words. That's blood.
There were MANY MORE brilliant and passionate comments…

The Last Word

Nycgirl found this:

"Right now somewhere in... the world
A Jew is saying his prayers,
A Hindu is chanting a mantra and a
...Buddhist is kneeling at her sacred shrine.
Right now at this very moment someone is
Lighting a Candle in a Cathedral
Someone is making their haj toward Mecca
For it is the will of Allah,
And someone else is lighting a fire in a jungle
Repeating an ancient mystical drama.
Many, Many pathways up the mountaintop
And the View is always the same from the summit!

In the Dawning of the Spiritual Sun
For a moment all faiths became as One.
The Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jew
Became as One and somehow knew
That Mystic Voice that calls to me
O yonder, yonder person I Am Thee!"
